Welcome to the world of The Handmaid's Tale...

Ohio bill would ban abortions once heartbeat is detected

COLUMBUS - Legislation set to be introduced Wednesday at the Statehouse is seen by both sides of the abortion issue as a likely test case that could end up in the U.S. Supreme Court.

State Rep. Lynn Wachtmann, a Republican from Henry County, drafted the bill to ban abortions in Ohio once a fetus' heartbeat is detected.

Lori Viars of Lebanon, vice president of Warren County Right to Life, said the wording of the bill was being reviewed by legislative experts on Monday. The heartbeat of a fetus is typically detected as early as six to eight weeks.

Supporters of the ban plan an 11 a.m. Statehouse news conference Wednesday and have set up a website, www.HeartBeatBill.com, to raise money to send all 99 Ohio House members red, heart-shaped balloons by Valentine's Day. Republicans control 60 House seats. Forty of 99 representatives have signed onto the bill....

3. Tired strategy (all about the fetus, not about the vessel, I mean woman, it occupies.)
People, this isn't 1981.

4. Alas, Iris, it is their best strategy. Vessel status for the woman.
Even Roe takes that position after the first trimester.

5. These people need to be stopped.
They keep coming at women and their right to choose in any way they can think of.

Recommended.

7. That would pretty much end abortions.

Most women do not realize they are expecting until at least they have missed a period. Add a few days or so to make sure it's not just late and you're already five weeks along. That's very close to when the heartbeat begins to be detectable.

So, unless a women is obsessed with about pregnancy and wakes up each morning thinking of that first and her doctor or clinic has immediate openings for appointments she is not going to make the deadline. And my guess is that if she is that fearful and watchful she is probably using all kinds of birth control as it is.

8. Not constitutional w/o an exception for life and health of the mother.
So obsessed with embryos and fetuses but not with giving them any help after they are born.

Damned hypocrites. I never see them adopting unwanted children. Especially ones with special needs or that are non-white.

10. That also would put an abortion ban much earlier than Roe v. Wade
If human fetus get a heartbeat as early as horses. I don't know human fetal development, but a horse fetus can show a heartbeat on a ultrasound as early as eighteen days. Roe v. Wade allows unqualified abortions to 13 weeks, if I remember correctly.

9. I'm really, really weary from fighting this battle
over and over and over again. It's time for the young women in the country to take up the standard and fight for the right to choose and have control over their own bodies. I guess most of them have no real comprehension of what back alley abortions did to women....maybe they will have to find out before they take it seriously.

If only someone had aborted these meddling fuckers.

13. Ain't that the truth!
Once they get into office all they do is think up new ways to oppress women, gays, immigrants, etc. It's like battling the political wing of the KKK.
