"They're Acting Like Spoiled Children and Embarrassing Our Country"
In a wealthy Cairo enclave, Egyptians are eager to get back to their ordinary lives.

BY LAUREN E. BOHN | FEBRUARY 6, 2011

CAIRO—The buzz of blow driers drowned out any talk of revolution at a popular salon in Zamalek, an upscale neighborhood on an island in Cairo that is home to some of Egypt's wealthiest. The beauty boutique had been closed for days. But on the twelfth day of protests, it was back to business as usual.

Zamalek is located just across the river from Tahrir Square, the epicenter of one of the most significant fights for democracy in modern Arab history. Many say they have remained in their homes all week, but finally stepped out today in an attempt to regain normalcy.

"I miss driving home late at night. I miss Tamarai and Club 35," said Farida El Khadem, 22, typing gingerly on her Blackberry to protect her fresh manicure. "I don't think I'll be able to go there anytime soon. I want my life back."

...

"We thought of it like Lebanon, where people go out dancing after bombs," Hanam said as blue and red curlers were pulled from her hair. On the floor below, women got Botox and laser hair removal treatments. "But we are all scared for our futures."

Dream with Me
Hamza Namira

Dream with me,
Of a tomorrow that’s coming,
And if it doesn’t come,
We’ll bring it ourselves.
We’ll stride upon this path,
Our many footsteps will lead us to our dream.

Dream with me,
Of a tomorrow that’s coming,
And if it doesn’t come,
We’ll bring it ourselves.
We’ll stride upon this path,
Our many footsteps will lead us to our dream.

No matter how many times we fall,
We’ll be able to rise again,
Find the way through, challenge and defy the dark clouds,
We’ll find our night transformed into a thousand days,
Only if we dream.

No matter how many times we fall,
We’ll be able to rise again,
Find the way through, challenge and defy the dark clouds,
We’ll find our night transformed into a thousand days,
Only if we dream.

Dream with me my friend,
Our footsteps will shorten the distance
I care about my innocent dream
Whatever it may be
It will stand beside us
No matter how long our journey becomes
Even if we become lost, my friend,
Our reunion will rally us toward our dream,
Towards our dream,
Towards our dream,
Towards our dream.

Towards our dream,
Towards our dream,
Towards our dream,
Towards our dream,
Only if we dream.

"We're Not Leaving Until Mubarak Leaves"
by Kara N. Tina
Sunday Feb 6th, 2011 10:59 AM

This interview with Egyptian revolutionary socialist journalist Hossam el-Hamalawy was conducted on Saturday, February 5th at 8pm (Egyptian time). Due to time limitations we were only able to address half of the questions we had prepared. Below el-Hamalawy comments on the current decisive moment faced by those on the streets of Egypt, working-class participation and action, and the role of the army amongst other topics.

(audio file of interview for radio broadcast)

The situation in Egypt is developing incredibly fast, can you describe what's happening in the streets right now?

As I am talking to you there are more than 15,000 demonstrators in Tahrir square who are still occupying it. Earlier in the day the army came to evict the protestors by trying to destroy the barricades they set up near the Egyptian Museum and although the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in the square Dr. Beltagui had ordered and called upon everybody via the microphone to not resist the army, people shouted back at him including the base cadres of the Al-Ikhwān who were there. People ran and lay in front of the tanks in order to stop them which they managed to do. Later the army sent the commander of the central region, which is basically Cairo and the surrounding areas, along with three generals, to convince the protesters to leave but they shouted back at him saying "We're not leaving until Mubarak leaves."

It's raining in Cairo now, it's very cold but the protestors are holding out and more from the other provinces, specifically from Suez, have descended on Cairo to join the occupation today. In the meantime the government is continuing with its witch-hunt and demonization campaign against the protestors, blaming them for whatever malaise the country is going through at the moment which is actually the fault of the government and not the protestors. This follows twelve days of continuous protests starting on the 25th of January. The 25th of January is National Police Day here in Egypt and that's when the protests actually started. The Egyptian government wanted to basically liberate the Liberation Square, Tahrir Square, from the protestors today. And they started that in the morning but they have failed. It has been announced that tomorrow the government will resume work and they have called on all civil servants to attend to their jobs and to go to their factories. They wanted to smash the occupation of Tahrir today. But as I'm talking to you that occupation continues.

What are some of the hurdles the protest movement is facing, are there divisions emerging while trying to find common ground?

Yesterday the square was completely packed with more than one million protestors and Alexandria witnessed similar protests as well as the other provinces. But there are definitely big problems that the protest movement is now facing. Which way is the way forward? Today it has been announced that Gamal Mubarak and Safwat El-Sherif, who is one of the most hated figures and was the secretary general of the National Democratic Party, will be removed from their positions and one of Gamal Mubarak's associates, Dr. Hossam Badrawi was to take the secretary general position instead. There was also news that appeared on Al Arabiya, BBC and Al Jazeera that Hosni Mubarak had resigned as the president of the NDP, but of course not from his post as President. But now there is confusion because these reports have been denied, then confirmed again and then denied, so we are waiting to see.

    ...

Killed in the line of duty

Journalist Ahmed Mahmoud was shot as he filmed the clashes between protesters and riot police from his Cairo office.
Laila Alarian Last Modified: 06 Feb 2011 21:21 GMT

Ahmed Mahmoud, right, with Enas Abdel-Alim, his wife, who says without him, her "life is over"

...

Mahmoud watched as riot police fired tear gas canisters at protesters and brutally beat them.

Standing at his office window on Majlis al Shaab Street, Mahmoud quickly took out his mobile phone and started recording, a simple move that ultimately cost him his life.

Abdel-Alim said several eyewitnesses told her a uniformed police captain with Egypt's notorious Central Security forces yelled at her husband to stop filming.

Before Mahmoud even had a chance to react, she said, a sniper shot him.

The bullet hit his right eye and lodged in his brain. Mahmoud then fell into a pool of his own blood, according to a report in Al-Ahram, Egypt's largest state-owned newspaper.

A private estate called Egypt
Only a thousand families count in a country that Mubarak and his cronies regard as their fiefdom

Salwa Ismail
guardian.co.uk, Sunday 6 February 2011 19.00 GMT

There is a lot more behind Hosni Mubarak digging in his heels and setting his thugs on the peaceful protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square than pure politics. This is also about money. Mubarak and the clique surrounding him have long treated Egypt as their fiefdom and its resources as spoils to be divided among them.

Under sweeping privatisation policies, they appropriated profitable public enterprises and vast areas of state-owned lands. A small group of businessmen seized public assets and acquired monopoly positions in strategic commodity markets such as iron and steel, cement and wood. While crony capitalism flourished, local industries that were once the backbone of the economy were left to decline. At the same time, private sector industries making environmentally hazardous products like ceramics, marble and fertilisers have expanded without effective regulation at a great cost to the health of the population.

A tiny economic elite controlling consumption-geared production and imports has accumulated great wealth. This elite includes representatives of foreign companies with exclusive import rights in electronics, electric cables and automobiles. It also includes real estate developers who created a construction boom in gated communities and resorts for the super-rich. Much of this development is on public land acquired at very low prices, with no proper tendering or bidding.

It is estimated that around a thousand families maintain control of vast areas of the economy. This business class sought to consolidate itself and protect its wealth through political office. The National Democratic party was their primary vehicle for doing so. This alliance of money and politics became flagrant in recent years when a number of businessmen became government ministers with portfolios that clearly overlapped with their private interests.

...

“He’s threatening the whole world that if he leaves, the Muslim Brotherhood will take over,” said Lipstick. “It’s not true. Another lie: they say we are against Israel. We are not. We want to live in peace.”

...

According to a cable published by Wikileaks, Vice President Omar Suleiman, who was negotiating with the group today, told the FBI Director Robert Mueller in 2006 that the Brotherhood had spawned 11 different Islamist extremist organisations, including Egyptian Islamic Jihad and Gama’a Islamiya, which carried out attacks on tourists and other targets in the 1990s.

...

The Israelis are highly suspicious of the Muslim Brotherhood, citing their links to the Nazis in the 1930s. There is a lot of anti-Israeli feeling in Egypt, and it was an Islamist who assassinated President Sadat in 1981, after he agreed a peace deal with Israel in 1979 at Camp David.

...

Israeli politicians are fond of saying that the west should support them because Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. But any democratic system in Egypt will have to accommodate the Muslim Brotherhood, so the USA and Israel may now find they have to work with those their old friend Hosni Mubarak has suppressed for so long.

Youth coalition rejects talks with embattled regime
Heba Afify
Sun, 06/02/2011 - 20:06

Leaders of numerous youth organizations, calling themselves the Coalition of the Angry Youth Uprising, announced at a press conference today that they would not negotiate with the Mubarak regime until their demands for the president's ouster were met.

The group, which includes the 6 April protest movement, Young People for Justice and Freedom and the Muslim Brotherhood's youth wing, insist that the activists who met with newly-appointed Vice-President Omar Suleiman on Sunday did not represent them or those now in Tahrir Square.

“The people who negotiated with Suleiman only represent themselves. All the youths organizations are united in their position--no negotiations until Mubarak’s departure,” says 6 April leader Ahmed Maher.

...

Activist Shady al-Ghazaly Harb says that the agreement reached by those opposition representatives who met with Suleiman failed to meet demonstrators' minimum demands.

Party leader’s nephew arrested for possible links to intel chief's presidential campaign
Tue, 14/09/2010 - 22:29

Egyptian security forces on Tuesday arrested the nephew of Osama al-Ghazali Harb, president of the opposition Democratic Front Party (DFP), at Cairo International Airport, according to a press release issued by the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI).

Harb believes the arrest may be attributable to his nephew’s closeness to activists involved with an informal presidential campaign in support of Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman.

According to the ANHRI statement, a certain security agency--which does not report to the Interior Ministry--“kidnapped” DFP activist Shadi Tarek al-Ghazali at 7:00 AM on Tuesday.

...

The ANHRI statement added that "the repeated disappearances of activists in recent days, without comment from the Interior Ministry and with the prosecution declining to respond to calls to investigate those responsible, leads us to believe that a security body higher than the state security apparatus stands behind the activists’ disappearance."
