March in downtown Raleigh will target proposed school changes and other issues

Opponents of the policies of the Republican members of the Wake County school board will march on downtown Raleigh Saturday, Feb. 12.

The rally is being organized by a coalition calling itself “HKonJ,” (historic thousands on Jones Street). It is led by the N.C. Conference of the NAACP, and organizer characterize the group as a coalition of almost 100groups “in support of a broad, 14-point People’s Agenda – for diverse schools, affordable housing, worker fairness, voting rights, equal justice and more.” Groups that have signed on as officials upportres include the AARP of North Carolina, the AFL-CIO and various labor groups, various churches and religious groups, Common Cause and the YWCA of the Greater TRiangle.

The N.C. NAACP has led opposition to the Republican majority’s efforts to establish a system of neighborhood schools in Wake County. The majority, which swept into office in 2008 after campaigning to end forced busing to diversify schools, has said that they are responding to long-standing dissatisfaction among parents and students to the district’s busing policies.
