1. This is so chilling
Thanks so much for posting this, Mira.

First hand these reporters heard the beating torture of Egyptians evidently involved in the protests.

3. Remember what one protester said....
That if they give up now they will be hunted down one by one. They know they have a predatory government.

It's one thing to believe things. But these first hand accounts of what these journalists witnessed allows us to say that we *know* people are being held and tortured in at least one Egyptian prison.

Btw, according to Associate Prof. Paul Amar of the University of California, Santa Barbara who was interviewed today on Democracy Now - this protest movement was started by women union workers as a labor protest.

7. "this protest movement was started by women union workers as a labor protest."
I didn't know that.

Could you find out more about this, if you can, and write an OP about it?

If this is accurate, it is very important to know!

9. It was said on Democracy Now's 2 hour special of today about Egypt
They repeated it and hopefully there's a transcript.

I'm just leaving for the grocery. But I'll look for the transcript when I get back and PM you. The text of his statement was fairly comprehensive. You'll like reading it, too.

ttyl!

10. Thanks!
If you can find it later in the transcript, that would be great.

As a couple of us have mentioned, that needs to be an OP by itself, and I hope you will do that when/if you can find the info.

Thank you so much for posting this.... important bit of information, and the fact that it is about the women makes it VERY important.

5. I agree with eleny, chilling. The US has used Egypt for renditions and I cannot begin to
express my horror, my shame and my deepest sorrow for the US role that created the need for this revolution.

16. And this is the regime that our
government still seems to want to back up because of oil, because of access to the Suez Canal, and perhaps because our role in rendition and torture will be revealed. It's like our government believes that couldn't be achieved by a new Democratic government. They are fearing an Islamic government, but I don't see the Egyptians demanding that. They want a secular and democratic government. We need to step out the the way and let them achieve what they want. The chips are just going to have to fall at George Bush's and Rumsfeld's feet when our role in torture and rendition is revealed. It's time we did penance.
