Egyptian Revolution Tweets February 3 2010 Crackdown Part 7
Previous thread here http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x341896

Compare these two articles.
CAIRO — Whipped up by state television and spoiling for a fight, thousands of supporters of President Hosni Mubarak flooded into the center of Egypt’s capital Wednesday, sparking violent clashes that shifted the momentum in a political confrontation that has gripped the region and the world.

    www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/02/AR2011020203035.html?wprss=rss_print
CAIRO — President Hosni Mubarak struck back at his opponents on Wednesday, unleashing waves of his supporters armed with clubs, rocks, knives and firebombs in a concentrated assault on thousands of antigovernment protesters in Tahrir Sqaure calling for an end to his authoritarian rule … The crackdown was in defiance of calls by the United States and Europe to avoid violence … The Mubarak supporters emerged from buses. They carried the same flags and the same printed signs, and they all escalated their actions, from shouting to violence, at exactly the same moment: 2:15 p.m. The protesters showed journalists police and ruling party identification cards which they said had been taken from Mubarak supporters who had been caught infiltrating Tahrir Square, also known as Liberation Square, and detained in a holding pen.

1. Article- Egypt: The Man Staring at me made a throat-slitting gesture
Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 08:03 PM by Catherina

...

We retreated down the street to our car. A group of young men approached, armed with baseball bats, sticks and machetes. They were the neighbourhood Popular Committee.

For the past few days, these groups have been smiling and friendly to us but this lot started shouting and banging on the roof of our car. They demanded to see our passports.

I think I know why. Last night and today, Egyptian state TV had been broadcasting of Israeli spies disguised as western journalists roaming the country.

It’s a wicked rumour to spread because it puts any westerner – or any Egyptian working with westerners – at risk of a beating or worse. It’s cynical to say the least.

17. They're still fixated on September.
White House, Egypt Discuss Plan for Mubarak’s Exit
By HELENE COOPER and MARK LANDLER
Published: February 3, 2011

...

Even though Mr. Mubarak has balked, so far, at leaving now, officials from both governments are continuing talks about a plan in which, Mr. Suleiman, backed by Sami Enan, chief of the Egyptian armed forces, and Field Marshal Mohamed Tantawi, the Defense Minister, would immediately begin a process of constitutional reform.

...

The proposal also calls for the transitional government to invite members from a broad range of opposition groups, including the banned Muslim Brotherhood, to begin work to open up the country’s electoral system in an effort to bring about free and fair elections in September, the officials said.

Senior administration officials said that the proposal is one of several options under discussion with high-level Egyptian officials around Mr. Mubarak, though not him directly, in an effort to convince him to step down now.

The officials cautioned that the outcome depended on several factors, not least of all the mood of the protesters on the streets of Cairo and other Egyptian cities and the dynamics within the Egyptian government. Some officials said there was not yet any indication that either Mr. Suleiman or the military were willing to abandon Mr. Mubarak.

Media wars
Posted on February 4, 2011 by Sarah Carr
I didn’t go out at all today (Thursday) because as part of its campaign against the Tahrir protestors the regime has ordered the media to initiate a vile hate campaign against journalists and foreigners – which I am sort of both.

The mood changed yesterday and suddenly I was unable to leave my house. Friends rang me, warning me that gangs of people were roaming around Cairo’s streets attacking foreigners, or people who look foreign, or are suspected of being foreign, or agents, or spies, or Israeli, or Palestinian, or Iranian, or all of the above. Over 20 journalists were detained, some were roughed up, a photojournalist was stabbed. Journalists were chucked out of hotels, apparently on government orders.

...

The worst thing about this is how very un-Egyptian it is. Much is made of the legendary Egyptian hospitality, and for good reason. Egyptians take care of their guests. Which is not to say that xenophobia or racism doesn’t exist, and doesn’t exist in its worst forms. But very generally speaking I’ve felt safer and more looked after in Egypt than anywhere else in the world.

The descent into murky hatred coincides with a concerted state media campaign against foreigners and sinister “foreign agents” who are behind the Tahir protests, a continuation of previous campaigns against foreigners which have targeted e.g. Palestinians, religious minorities, gays, Shias…etc. State media is an extension of the regime. Add this to a security vacuum and the withdrawal of the police and a desperate regime and uncertainty and you get this, another highly convenient instance of manufactured discontent.

Don't tell me read your constitution - محدش يقولي اقرا دستورك http://on.fb.me/faOPCz #Jan25
7 minutes ago via YoruFukurou

Please don't tell me read your constitution, I know my constitution long before someone had to come up on TV and tell me to read its articles. Its naive to believe that this constitution has not been tailored to keep the regime in power and make it hard and put obstacles in the face of the opposition and the eventuality of a revolution.

This constitution has been manipulated and for 30 years has been tailored to serve the interests of the regime and the NDP. A constitution is supposed to represent the the people and not one political party or the regime, and a constitution that fails to do so is void and has no legitimacy, and the legitimacy of the revolution is stronger. And please spare me the "This constitution DOES represent me" talk because 1- You didn't vote for the members of the parliament, they were elected through fraud and violence against voters, and are therefore not legitimate, and so are their decisions/actions including any constitutional changes/amendments. 2- You didn't know about the articles of your constitution until a few days ago, and I dare claim until yesterday. So what role did you play in putting down this constitution.

A constitution is what the people want, and not divine law.

Freedom and dignity - Be with the revolution.

41. The "pro-Mubarak" paramilitary thugs are behaving exactly like the Guatemalan
"Death Squad" paramilitary. Also a CIA set-up. #Jan25 #Egypt

That last one is a good NYT article btw, summarizing the intimidation against reporters, most of it today.

45. That was priceless. Only had time to read 2 paragraphs but
it confirms how low the Egyptian government has sunk

Following the on-site interrogations, the police and army personnel accused all the Egyptians working at the Law Center of being affiliated with Hamas and accused all the foreigners at the Center of being affiliated with Israeli intelligence service Mossad.

"So it's a Hamas-Mossad conspiracy apparently," Malinowski told The Cable with a sigh.

I'd be rolling all over the floor laughing right now if I'd read that any other time and it wasn't stirring up real ugliness.

Thanks
