19. Seriously?
I have a feeling Obama could personally put a bullet into Mubarak's head and appoint the reincarnation of Gandhi to handle a free and fair election in Egypt, and he would still catch shit around here.

I have plenty of beefs with the President, but give me a freaking break.

4. He said that it is up to the Egyptian people to pick their leader.....and how.....
that it isn't up to him, or American people on the Internet.

In essence, Obama was stating that he isn't their President,
but that he will support their decision as long as it is a peaceful one.

He always talks about change. His words were very cautious but I think he's saying Mubarek really needs to get the fuck out of Dodge, but we aren't going to make him. The Egyptian people are going to make him.

54. He agreed with the plan outlined earlier by Mubarak
Edited on Tue Feb-01-11 09:46 PM by Bragi
The plan outlined by Mubarak earlier has him leading the "transition" and leaving after the elections in September. Obama signaled in his speech that this outcome was fine with him, as long as there is no violence. This is despite the demand of the people that Mubarak go "now", which isn't "nine months from now."

55. No. If that was the case he would have said, "the transition has already begun".
Plus, the President sent an envoy to tell Mubarak to step aside.

Plus he said in his speech that he told Mubarak that the status quo was not sustainable. That was AFTER Mubarak changed his gov't.

Plus he said "To the people of Egypt.... I have an unyielding belief that you will determine your own destiny and seize the promise of a better future for your children and your grandchildren."

16. After listening and watching loads of opinion over the last week....
...... one thing which stands out for me in all the discussion, is, the Egyptian people are not asking for, nor want, American meddling or pushing in this situation. So I think it would be unseemly for the POTUS to publicly state when and where Mubarek should resign. He may be doing so behind the scenes, for better or worse. Maybe the Egyptian public needs pushing from world leaders, but it would be undiplomatic to be specifically ordering the scenario.

Shit said in private means nothing if it is contradicted by what you say and do in public.

Obama made it clear that he sees Mubarak as part of the "transition" until the elctions in September.

The Egyptian people have said no to this.

that is not what he said.

If you need to several times.

A lot of what is happening is in the background. These are just the ok you ass.. here we go. I am betting that if he said, ok, I get it and got on a plane... Obama would have waited UNTIL the next leader was appointed.

The Egyptian people have already said no to this.

49. He will reappear in DC, where there will be closed door meetings
followed by photo op on the WH lawn.

Shortly thereafter Mubarak will be given another jet, a billion dollars, and an apology for not delivering the jet to him

Then, back to Egypt and business as usual, including US foreign aid - most of which will not trickle down to the hungry kids in the streets.

33. It was a speech conversation between him and mubarak
Hosni said, I am staying and not running... I will die in my country.

The president told him... no you won't, you need to leave.

It was just in diplomatese.

He also spoke directly to the army, admitting that the army has a large role to play, and thanked them for taking the side of the people.
