1. my "insurance"
no longer pays for my allergy medication as of Jan. 1, 2011 I just found out.

The "plan" is a costly one and I've deemed it to be a pile o'sh*t! :grr:

:kick:

4. Indeed.
Or 'private insurance' that has an out-of-pocket deductible so high you'll never meet it for the actual 'coverage' to kick in during any given year ... mine is $2500 and I rarely get sick, so what do I even have insurance for? It's never going to actually pay for anything ...

5. Should you ever have a "serious" illness or accident, you will
burn through that 2,500 in just a matter of weeks; and you will thank God that you had coverage. Three to four weeks in the hospital can cost upwards of 100,000 dollars. And that is exclusive of surgery and other associated costs.

9. The other reason to have that insurance is that whenever
you do go to a doctor or hospital, you will be billed the lower insurance company negotiated rates for whatever services you use, NOT the vastly higher amounts billed to those who don't have insurance.

I've done outpatient registration (for things like blood work, xrays, MRIs, etc) and have seen private insurance with deductibles as high as $10,000. Again, the benefit is lower out-of-pocket costs in the first place, and coverage for anything catastrophic.

6. I just priced private insurance plans because my insurance is ending.
I only need private insurance for a couple of months until I become eligible for medicare. That's all.

$3,000 cost to me before I would see any benefit at all because of up front costs and deductibles. This includes the deductible.

$1,000 cost per month (more than that actually, but I'm rounding off the numbers)

20% co-insurance cost, meaning I would have to pay 20% of every doctor visit, service, fee, charge, and bill on top of co-pays and deductibles.

Co-pays of up to $100 on common meds.

The only place the costs are reasonable is co-pays of $20 to see doctors if they are in network. But I would pay their full office cost if they are out of network. My doctors are all in-network, so that is the ONLY place this insurance would be useful for me.

Can Anyone tell me how this is affordable? Could Anyone here afford this insurance plan? How much money would you have to make in a month to be able to absorb an insurance plan this expensive?

And this is for an INDIVIDUAL! The costs for a parent/child are double this. For a family the costs are far higher than that.

So despite having chronic severe daily pain and several disabilities I will have to survive for several months without any health insurance. Gods and Tooth Faeries only tell me how I'm going to manage!

8. I'm cobra'd right now
cost is $471. Meds are $5 generic $25 non generic and I get the medicine for 3 months, cost is $130 for 3 months of meds. My cobra administrators keep changing the due date of my payment and in January they canceled my policy, though they cashed my check. I spoke to them and they said they could only non-cancel my policy if I had an emergency. I told them I had an appointment for a mammogram & that was an emergency (all clear on mammogram results) and I needed to order my meds. My insurance was activated.

Since they canceled the policy I received information on other policies, the cheapest was $981 a month, and like other posts here, it was 20% copay for hospitals and doctor visits, also there was no prescription policy. I have checked the non insurance costs of my meds and the cost is $1200 per month. So my cost for insurance and proscriptions would be over $2000 per month. How is this economical? I have 11 years to go until I'm medicare eligible.

10. My insurance won't pay a dime for anything until I pay $2700 for the year
So of course, it never pays a dime. But the insurance company pockets the premiums. All it's good for is catastrophic events.

11. Somewhat true...
If you have an accident or get a serious illness that requires extensive care and surgery...it's definitely worth it.

But if you require expensive meds and your insurance doesn't cover enough to make them affordable...yeah, I can see why anyone would believe that. I would, too.
