Bush’s Daughter, in a Break, Endorses Gay Marriage
Bush’s Daughter, in a Break, Endorses Gay Marriage

-snip-

Barbara Bush, one of the twin daughters of George W. Bush, will endorse same-sex marriage on Tuesday, publicly breaking ranks with a father who, as president, pushed for a constitutional amendment banning such unions.

Ms. Bush, 29, has taped a video calling on New York to legalize gay marriage. A bill to do that was defeated in the state in 2009. She describes the issue as a matter of conscience and equality.

“I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality,” she says in the brief message, sponsored by an advocacy group. “New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love.”

The video ends with Ms. Bush, who lives in Manhattan, imploring the state’s residents to “join us.”

Ms. Bush is the latest child of a prominent Republican leader to embrace same-sex marriage, long considered anathema to the conservative movement. Gay rights advocates have been quick to seize on the generational split as evidence that the acceptance of same-sex marriage is blind to party affiliation and family values.

1. I hope these younger conservatives are genuine in their belief in "fairness and equality"
Because I would hate for the Republican party to see this as an opportunity to pull votes from the Democratic party by supporting gay marriage.

I can just see the Republican party testing the waters by using well-known children of well-known anti-marriage Repubs to test the waters on the issue. I put nothing past those people. :)

3. Log Cabin Republicans and GOProud seem to be voices within their camp
Yes, there is some controversy but for the most part they are accepted openly or at least given a "wait and see" reception.

We should always look for friends and victories where ever we can find them, even if they have a different letter behind their name.

2. Would have been nice if she'd mentioned that when she and Jenna spoke at the 2004 RNC convention.

5. Why is it news when someone disagrees with their parents on something?
It's really odd that conservatives think their kids think the same stupid things they do. Sure some of them do, but it isn't strange for people to disagree with their parents. Most people I know, their parents politics plays a very small role in how they feel politically.

6. Whoops
GOP demographics sure seem to be turning out bad. If their own kids are against them, then time will take its toll. I'm starting to believe the GOP will go away, and a new rightish party will emerge. And it won't be able to waste its time attacking homosexuals or trying to impose religion on people.

I also suspect the fundamentalists and the racists will split off, and they'll form fringe parties.
