Ever Heard of Vivos? A network of massive underground shelters from the coming apocalypse. Really.
You must apply, and if chosen valuable enough to the preservation of the human race, $20K will get you into one of these community survival shelters. This seems to be for real, because as you explore the site, see the network that stretches across the nation, view images of what these shelters will look like, you can also see news reports from cbs, abc, and others.

2012, here we come...

22. This is similar to a plot Greg Bear would write.
In fact, in SLANT, there is a secret underground compound in Green Idaho called Opthalmos which is so very much like Vivos.

43. LEVEL 7, a novel by Mordecai Rosheald
is about a whole series of underground shelters to enable survival in a nuclear war. It's very good. It's narrated in the form of a diary, and the diary-keeper is in the lowest level, level 7, which is presumed to be capable of keeping survivors for at least a hundred years. If you can find a copy, I highly recommend it.

I'd love to know if anyone has given them $20K yet, or if they're still waiting for their first mark.

8. no thanks,
if they say members only, no need to be part of that.

Although the pun of posting here is a funny one :D

Wouldn't that be funny, if they been building shelters for some false fear of some 'end' and that is why they not spending money on any other groups, because they figure they are already goners.

There is a story in that somewhere. If someone thought such shelters would be needed, and there are stories about that, then anyone they thought would not be let in, would be ignored in every other way also.

That is one of the reason they want people to think in ways of end of the world things. It breaks empathy or concepts of doing things for the long term.

Side note, I am due beer and travel money and many experiences.

23. ..."...the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics..."...
"Mr. President, I would not rule out the chance to preserve a nucleus of human specimens. It would be quite easy atthe bottom of some of our deeper mineshafts. The radioactivity would never penetrate a mine some thousands of feet deep. And in a matter of weeks, sufficient improvements in dwelling space could easily be provided."
"How long would you have to stay down there?"
"I would think that uh possibly one hundred years."
"You mean, people could actually stay down there for a hundred years?"
"It would not be difficult mein Fuhrer! Nuclear reactors could, heh... I'm sorry. Mr. President. Nuclear reactors could provide power almost indefinitely. Greenhouses could maintain plantlife. Animals could be bred and slaughtered. A quick survey would have to be made of all the available mine sites in the country. But I would guess... that ah, dwelling space for several hundred thousands of our people could easily be provided."
"Well I... I would hate to have to decide who stays up and who goes down."
"Well, that would not be necessary Mr. President. It could easily be accomplished with a computer. And a computer could be set and programmed to accept factors from youth, health, sexual fertility, intelligence, and a cross section of necessary skills. Of course it would be absolutely vital that our top government and military men be included to foster and impart the required principles of leadership and tradition. Naturally, they would breed prodigiously, eh? There would bemuch time, and little to do. But ah with the proper breeding techniques and a ratio of say, ten females to each male, I would guess that they could then work their way back to the present gross national product within say, twenty years."
- Dr Strangelove & President Merkin Muffley

"Doctor, you mentioned the ration of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?"
"Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature"
- General Buck Turgidson & Dr Strangelove

31. No REAL Christian would ever send in his or her $20k!
Because, as we all know from our reading of the Bible, at the first warning sign of The Apocalypse Jesus is going to pull out The Holy Shop Vac of Antioch and suck away all the True Believers in The Rapture, leaving the Great Unwashed to run around collecting up their cars and other worldly goods.

Of course, once they get to The Pearly Gates (tm) St. Peter will look at them, inform them they were led astray by a weird eschatological theory that doesn't actually exist in the Bible and ship them right off to Hell.

Edited on Tue Feb-01-11 06:44 AM by old mark
in case of nuclear war, but they were ONLY for the top level politicians in congress and the WH...the rest of us, who paid for all of it, were on our own...
BUT we could be reassured because our great leaders would live on to start the country up again, still in power after most of us were gone...

It was at the Greenbriar hotel in Virginia, and is now open to tourists...

http://www.conelrad.com/groundzero/greenbrier.html

We would all have been killed, Newt would have been safe!

What better example of the politician's attitude toward the rest of us?

added; there are still similar shelters in London and Moscow...
