People in the path of the storm
Time may be short, but please take a moment to inspect your trees.. If you have limbs overhanging your roof, 1" of ice combined with wind, could bring that limb into your bedroom:scared:

Know where your candles are and your batteries too

stay warm and hunker down..

2. I put in 7 years one mile from Lake Michigan
Edited on Mon Jan-31-11 07:22 PM by SoCalDem
and once had to go to work with my husband & sit in the conference room ( all day...for a week) after an ice storm.. we had no power for a week..and since we had an electric starter on our gas furnace and an electric pump for our well, we had no lights, no heat no water ..

my zipcode changed, but I understand cold, ice & snow..

have also lived near Kansas City & Denver, so I have more than a passing acquaintance with winter:P

6. Oh, we're already fucked big time
When the house was built 60 years ago, they planted six cute pine trees about 10 feet apart along one side of the house.

Awwww...

Flash forward to 2010, six 35-foot-plus tall pine trees, one of which is already partially uprooted, in a line passing maybe 10 feet from our house and maybe 30 feet from the neighbor's house.

The roof has a healthy layer of snow and ice on it, the gutters are frozen solid, and there's a giant icicle that hangs from the eave to the groud about as thick as my leg.

19. Yeah, my parents have been hating those trees for years
Pine trees. Bleah. Well, they've been here 60 years, so they'll probably survive this storm too.

7. You post this after dark right before the storm hits me.
Uh, thanks for the advise, but I am not going to do anything about that now. Hell, I have an outdoor light bulb burned out and I have decided to wait till June to replace it.

OK, I got that off my chest. Now everyone please keep me in your thoughts. I may be sorry I said this! Tree in bedroom, not good.

14. My daughter is doing your migration, but backwards she's now in ILL
after years in southern California.

Last week she learned about cold frozen car door latches, also how it causes tire pressure to drop.

Tonite, she'll be learning what winter is like without a golden retriever or newfie for a bed warmer--

it looks to be a three dog night.

15. Thank You for your consideration.
We here in STL are in the path of this thing (which seems to be changing constantly) so it will either be some ice with a few inches of snow or the 8 zillion inches.

Working in the grocery biz, I will tell you that my store did the equivalent of 1/3 week's of sales just yesterday. We sold out of rock salt & ice melt yesterday in the afternoon. We had a pallet that I pulled off the truck yesterday with a bunch of torn bags, I boxed up those 18 bags (and marked them down) this morning and sold them in about 15 minutes. Even Christmas Eve was not this busy.

I have made what contingency plans I can based upon the rather bizarre forecasting so we are doing the best we can right now. Your thoughts are appreciated.....:hi:
