Men of Tears: workshops where men go to cry
Men of Tears: workshops where men go to cry
Sophie Brickman, Chronicle Staff Writer

A few moments before 4 p.m. on a recent Wednesday, nine men ages 25 to 67, filed into a small, bare office in San Anselmo, arranged their chairs in a circle, sat down and prepared to cry.

Few knew each other. Some hadn't cried since they were young boys and wanted to learn how to cry again. A few cried often, and were thrilled to have found a safe space to do so.

These were the Men of Tears.

"If you can't cry, you can't find joy," says Lee Glickstein of Woodacre, founder of Speaking Circles International, which offers instruction in public speaking.

Glickstein and Pete van Dyk, a couples' and troubled boys' counselor who lives in Fairfax, founded the group in July, basing it on the idea that suppressing tears is detrimental to individual physical and emotional health, as well as the health of the community. The more men let out their tears, Glickstein and van Dyk claim, the less anger and violence in the world.

3. Sounds more like a non-sexual fetish than a release of "suppressed emotions" .

4. This is an improvement over Men of Pears, they would just sit around and eat Bartletts all day.
By the end of their sessions, fruit flies would be everywhere.

Thanks for the thread, Liberal_in_LA.

6. Great idea - I hope it's helpful
What a crime, though, that this is a lesson that has to be taught to adults. Own your emotions, gentlemen!

15. so true. lmao. i dropped boys off with friends to watch it. `13 yr old gets in car,
and the others laughing (in love) cause he cried and cried. he said, dont know why. then telling me about the movie on the way home.... he would cry. oh, was the cutest, and funniest. we got home and i looked up on computer cause my 24 yr old nephew saw the movie prior and he said he cried. niece didnt cry. their little girl didnt cry. so looked up "why men cry with toy story 3" and there were friggin articles on it.

did a thread on du.... so many men came on that thread.

14. i havent cried sad tears in forever..... but happy tears, often.
i dont cry sad tears, cause i havent had sad, not cause i cant.

i never beat boys up when they cry. my oldest worked on it himself to ensure he doesnt cry. at 12. he would take pride and even discuss with me. but periodically over the years, he will when overwhelmed and then feel shame. that.... the shame, isnt allowed. i talk, i listen, and the tears just are.
