War Protesters, Where Are You?
War Protesters, Where Are You?
(posted with permission from http://sane-ramblings.blogspot.com/2011/01/war-protesters-where-are-you.html)

When President George W. Bush launched the Iraq and Afghan Wars, 15 million of you in 800 U.S. cities protested and although in fewer numbers, those protests continued throughout his presidency. But when Barack Obama became President in 2009, most of you fell silent, joining the vast majority of Americans who have been silent throughout these wars as the death and destruction continues. Where is your moral outrage? Do you no longer care? Maybe you are caught up in President Obama's charisma and you ignore his actions.

Just before Christmas, in blizzard conditions, between 100 and 200 peace protesters, many of them former soldiers, held a peaceful vigil outside the White House. They were arrested and you remained silent. 77 year old Korean War veteran John Fortier and I host weekly candlelight vigils along Pacific Coast Highway in the Los Angeles area, http://candlelightvigils.blogspot.com/. If the wars matter to you what actions are you taking?

When President Obama abandoned his pledge to end the Iraq War in 16 months, instead adopting President Bush's program, little was said. When he escalated the Afghan War and the death toll mounted again little was said.

That President Obama has now initiated wars in Yemen and Somalia and continued the one in Pakistan still did not get you involved. That he not only didn't close Guantanamo, but has death squads conducting "targeted killings" and secret CIA run prisons which torture as they did under Mr. Bush still does not raise your ire. The U.S. may no longer be waterboarding but does seizing, torturing and holding without charge satisfy you?

Meanwhile in Iraq on Tuesday, just north of Baghdad, a suicide bomber walked among a crowd of police job applicants and their families and detonated his explosives. In an instant, 60 men, women and children were dead and another 160 were seriously injured.

The casualty count was so high, that some of the victims were rushed to hospitals as far away as 120 miles. And Mosques across Iraq pleaded for blood donors. But the next day, renewed attacks killed 14 more in one incident and three others in another. And on Thursday, two suicide car bombings killed 56 Shiite Muslim worshipers and police in Karbala, just south of Baghdad. Another 189 were wounded.

While in Afghanistan Tuesday, a roadside bomb blew-up a van carrying families to a medical clinic, killing 13 men, women and children. Since President Obama's military surge began, people are being killed in greater numbers than at any time since the U.S. invaded Afghanistan nine years ago.

Yet America was deeply shaken when Jared Lee Loughner opened fire on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and others in Arizona January 8th, killing six people including a nine year old girl and wounding 13 others. But in Iraq and Afghanistan this would be just another day.

What will it take to get you involved? The deaths and maiming of more U.S. soldiers? It happens all the time including last week in Iraq in which three U.S. soldiers were killed in combat, despite President Obama having declared "an end to combat operations." What ever happened to "support our troops?"

In December when Congress ignored the 9/11 First Responder pleas for medical care, you got fired up and flooded Congressional offices with phone calls, emails, texts and twitters. As a result, Congress did a quick reversal and funded medical programs to help the First Responders.

You could end all these wars by doing the same thing. Please, in the name of God, or for humanity raise your voice for peace. Your conscience will thank you and you will set an excellent example for your children. And as the U.S. races to moral and fiscal bankruptcy funding weapons and wars, you will be doing your part to salvage our economy and to provide a better financial future for your family and for all of our families.

6. 15 million marched and made not one damn difference.
That's why there's no protesting today; it is completely futile, and might get you a trumped-up police charge, too.

10. I also believe that 15 million marched ...
Edited on Sat Jan-22-11 06:49 PM by zbdent
and only Fred Phelps' inbreeds really got any M$M coverage ... thus throwing the idea that the "war protesters" were all protesting military funerals.

Plus, the "individual liberties" aspect of protesting the war got really curtailed ... unless you're a TEA party "protester" (as in TP member, not protesting the TEA party) ...

12. Got tired of wasting a day and see the media lying about the numbers plus
you can't have any amplification equipment and a march of many thousands needs sounds to keep it going front to back.
A thousand protesters would show up and 2000 turtle clad cops would surround us - positioning themselves about every foot plus the moronic freeper types cuddling with the cops ("Can I have your picture, officer??")- ugh!

11. The media is enforcing invisibility.
Anti-war protests and marches will not be covered, will not be seen, will not be allowed to make the news. If, somehow, an event makes the news despite the blackout it will be downplayed and minimized.

Despite this, there is a thriving peace movement. But the FBI and the police departments are actively targeting the members of any known peace/anti-war group as if they are terrorists. The FBI is even going to far as to impanel a grand jury and then round up activists to testify in front to that grand jury. That means testifying without the right to a lawyer, with the FBI having the right to go on an endless fishing trip for any information they can use to put them in jail, and it also means being able to hold them indefinitely without ever filing any charges or ever putting them in front of a judge. They are being told to name others if they want to have any hope of ever going free, so that those others can be rounded up to be arrested and imprisoned without charges too.

So, because of (1) Media invisibility, and (2) targeting my law enforcement it isn't any wonder you don't hear much about anti-war protests.

Are you willing to organize a peace movement right now given the shit our government is doing and the lack of support for First Amendment Rights? Are you confident that the people you could find to work with you won't be government agents keeping an eye on you and working to undermine you? Are you willing to risk the FBI putting you in jail and abusing the criminal justice system to keep you there just because they can?

A hell of a lot of people are keeping their heads down now, and for damned good reasons. Unfortunately, that's exactly what the pro-war people want. Whether you are silent out of fear or agreement, they don't care, as long as you are silent. :(

13. Why do you think my partner is a retired cop and war vet?
It has gotten me out of more than one "tight squeeze" .
the police reluctantly let the Veterans For Peace remain at the straw Poll in Ft Worth in 2007.they didn't screw with us at all.
Granted... you heard NOTHING on the news.
that will be the challenge.

22. And some of us were not anti-war at all. Just anti-stupid wars
I have never stated that I was a pacifist because I am not. But I was against both wars started under Bush because they were based on lies and the only people who supported them in the first place were stupid as well. Very stupid.

Now if another country had attacked America under Bush I would not have been against defending ourselves. But that is not what happened. Some criminals, not state actors, planned and pulled off 9/11. I wanted anyone who was involved in that crime captured and fully prosecuted under our laws.

So the way I look at it now is Bush got us involved in two stupid wars and now President Obama needs to get us out of those messes Bush started. But he needs to do it intelligently. Not in a way that puts some other rapture ready Republican back into the White House.

17. My only bumpersticker says "No War!"
It's been on the car since late 2002, when millions of us were in the streets during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. It never seems to go out of date, somehow.

No more 'need two more years' crap. Families are being ruined more than any other wartime in our history (multiple deployments and their costs on lives).

25. Pissing against the tide...
Futility. Waste of time. Nobody listening. Advertising our own impotence.

Things like that.

Actually, when I tried to fire up the old group here in our small town, more than one member told me they want to "Support President Obama."

Not my country anymore.

27. War has become acceptable
And that is unacceptable. I saw somewhere that 60% of us are under age 30. That means only 40% of us remember Nam and out of that, there are quite a few who thought it was a good, moral, just war. After all, we stopped the spread of Communism and it only cost 58,000,000 lives. I think the fact that we've lost a small percentage of that in 2 wars spanning 10 years help make it acceptable.

Unless we wake up and realize that "boogie men" in one form or another will always be invented as a cause for war, it will continue. Far too many subscribe to the "Fighting them there" theory. Our media has become just another branch of the military. The constant barrage of horse shit about Islamofascism has done it's job. As long as people believe the "They hate us for our freedom" crap instead of searching for the truth, support for these wars will continue.

A youngster in another thread expressed fear about our over all situation in this country and asked what he could do. my answer to him and all that ask is educate yourself. Read about the history of Viet Nam. It was a war for profit just like the ones we have now. Form protest groups at you school. Read about the SDS. Get involved. It's your generation that's inheriting this mess so get busy~
