I do remember Teddy joyfully singing Mexican songs while campaigning for Kerry or Obama.

JFK's last night recalled as key event for Latinos

By RUSSELL CONTRERAS

President John F. Kennedy was supposed to just stop by and wave hello.

Instead a group of eager Latinos persuaded him to come inside and speak to a packed room of Mexican-American civil rights activists. And then he persuaded his wife, first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, to address the crowd in Spanish.

It was Nov. 21, 1963. Hours later, the president was dead, his assassination overshadowing the significance of a speech that can be seen as the birth of the Latino vote, so instrumental in 2012 in helping re-elect the first black president, Barack Obama.

To historians, Kennedy's appearance at the Rice Ballroom in Houston was likely the first time that a president officially acknowledged Latinos as an important voting bloc.

Though there are no plaques marking the historic occasion, the event is a touchstone for activists even if the spot where Kennedy sat and heard a band play Mexican ballads and where the crowd yelled "Viva Kennedy!" is now a refurbished ballroom in a loft apartment complex that often plays host to weddings.

The Puerto Rican-American and Mexican-American vote pretty much goes Democratic, while the Cuban vote pretty much goes Republican, which pretty much makes historic sense. However, if Rubio runs, as he seems to be preparing to do, I wonder if he will get the Puerto Rican-American and Mexican-American vote?

It's a hard choice. On the one hand, you want your kid to see someone who is a little like him or her achieving the highest office in the land. On the other hand, you want the policies that help your kid be assured of health care and student loans, etc.

1. that is absolutely fascinating!
and there's so much that presidents say and do that we never really hear about. I always say, just like many DUers feel, that if all GOPers were forced to watch even a few minutes of footage of the president, without biased commentary or interruption, many would surely stop their ridiculous griping!

:hi:

2. I've watched footage of Pesident Obama, of my own will, with no one and nothing
forcing me, without interruption and with commentary from MSNBC, which is biased toward him.

And I've griped about him plenty! But, I like to think that my griping has not been ridiculous.

3. Ha! Me, also. I'm referring to their griping that he's a commie, Kenyan, not the religion they
profess to be, and racial crap. But, yeah, I understand what you mean. ;)

4. Well, they think most Democrats are liberals, which is false, and liberals are Communists, which is
also false. So, anti-Democratic crap from Republicans is not limited to Obama. For example, Allen West claimed that all members of the House Progressive Caucus were "card carrying" members of the Communist Party. You can't fix crazy.

Racists do not limit their racism to Obama. And the Kenya thing is part of the racist thing. (IMO, Obama was trying not to flag the circumstances of his birth because his mom was only 19 when he was born and had gotten preganant by a man who had a wife in Africa. So, either she was an unwed teen mom when she had him or a bigamist teen mom. Either way, not something you want focused on.)

And wasn't it rather brilliant to release the birth certificate a day or two before announcing Bin Laden had been killed?

But, anyway, my point is that I don't think it's about Obama. It's about being anti-Democratic and/or racist.

If you are not already racist, you are not going to become racist toward one person. And if you can be rational (and honest) about Democrats, you are not going to become irrational about one person.

Neither are most of my complaints limited to Obama. My complaint really is how far right the party has moved; and Obama is not the one who moved it right. He just happened to come of age as the party was moving right.
