List of U.S. (wiki says American saints, but that is not accurate.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_saints_and_beatified_people

The first U.S. Native American saint (Algonquin Mohawk), as well as one of two of the newest U.S. saints, Kateri Tekakwitha (the other Native American saints being Mexican) She died in 1680 at age 24, a few years after her conversion.

After converting, apparently, mortification of the flesh with her friend, Marie Therese became her/their favorite activity. Self flagellation, fasting, etc. She died in the arms of Marie, saying "I love you, Jesus." One of the miracles that supposedly occurred after her death--she turned white and beautiful (in the eyes of her beholders, of course).

The other U.S. saint beatified in 2012 is St,. Marianne Cope, who founded a hospital for lepers in Hawaii in response to a plea for help from Hawaii's King Kalākaua. Among those treated was leper and fellow U.S. saint, Father Damien. She never caught the disease, which was considered a miracle.

1. Thanks, No Elephants. Interesting shit.
 :hi: Lapsed Catholic here.

That's a funny story about Kateri Tekakwitha turning white and beautiful after death as evidence of her exalted status. Even dark skinned Jesus liked white people better. Just goes to show ya.

2. As any fundie, lapsed or not, can tell you, Jesus never beatified anyone.

Well, not unless you believe that the Pope is Christ on Earth. And no self-respecting fundie believes that.

My Sunday School had a nursery school class. When I was in it, the large depiction of Jesus that hung there had blue eyes and shoulder length blonde hair, slightly wavy.

That, to me, was Jesus until, as some in Massachusetts say, "light dawned on Marblehead." (Marblehead being a lovely town in Massachusetts, but also a town whose name is pun fodder for locals.)

Jesus probably looked a lot like a Palestinian, but even Palestinians are probably lighter as there has been more "intermingling" with Westerners in the last 2000 years than there was in Jesus's time, including with the Crusaders.

Meanwhile, odd relationship between Ste. Katerie and her BFF, no?
