Idle hands are the devil's playground...

This is only my opinion but I believe that our society needs to be occupied with work or doing something productive or we slide into chaos, violence, depravity, and decline. We need structure and order for our younger people. If that means military training, then so be it. However, military should not automatically mean you have to go to war. There are other more productive ways to remain busy.

I see the young people and many of them are lost. They have lost touch with reality. Drugs and violence define their lives. These people need to be working or they need to be in the military. That is the choice our society should make. We cannot continue on the path we are on at the present time.

The shooting in Aurora is just another sign of a sick society. Greed is the religion of the day and if we cannot heal ourselves of this disease, we are doomed to further decline. If we cannot get away from this Republican vs Democrat diversion and look at the bigger picture, then the wealthy will continue to pick our pockets and we will not be able to help our society as a whole. Whether we like it or not, we are all in this boat together.

1. We do have a sick society. And nowhere near enough care for the mentally ill.

Good article on the shooter; http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_COLORADO_SHOOTING_SUSPECT?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2012-07-20-22-58-04

As far politics:

The Republicrat Demlican division is obviously very necessary to politicians, as are wedge issues. If it weren't for wedge issues and demonizing the other side, how ever would they distinguish themselves from the other side? Certainly not on "little" issues like war and the economy.

I don't mean rhetoric. Anyone can easily distinguish between the two Parties when it comes to their rhetoric. For example, Obama was anti- mandate and pro a strong public option, while Romney was pro mandate until he turned anti health care. Nor do I mean bills they file to keep the folks at home happy, knowing the bill will never pass. For example, HR 676, or single payor, which ended up being co-sponsored by just about every member of the Progressive Caucus--not ONE of whom even sent it for the mandatory budget

+I mean actual actions, as in, both Obama and Romney passed a health care bill with a mandate and little to no public option.

And now, Obama is stuck admitting publicly that he took his bill from Romney's (and Romney had taken his from Hillary, who had taken hers from the Republican Heritage Foundation).

Meanwhile, Romney is stuck trying to argue that when a state does the same thing as the feds do, it is entirely different. (Sure it is, Willard. The difference is that, at the time, you were Governor, not President, which is what you wanted to be. So, you did what you had the power to do. Had you been President, you would have done the same thing nationally.)

We now just about have two Republican Parties pretending they are more different from each other than they were in the days of Hoover and FDR. So, sure, they have to play up the demonization and the wedge issues.

2. How about public works?
I don't like the idea of adding thousands to the military with the right wing in control of the media and the government.

3. That would be ideal.
Something like the CCC.

I'm thinking of the terrible fire we had in Colorado Springs just a few weeks ago. If we had had the old brush and growth cleaned up near the populated area of Mountain Shadows, we may have prevented the worst part of that fire. They could be paid with cash and/or college scholarships. This would help society all around, in my opinion.

I still recall how fondly some of the old guys talk of their experiences in the CCC. They built a lot of roads and trails that we still enjoy today.

6. I heard on TV that the shooter had an undergraduate degree in neuroscience, maybe with honors, yet
the only job he could get out of college was at MacDonald's.

I cannot remember if they said he had gotten out of college with honors, but he was getting honors in the Ph.d program in neuroscience at University of Chicago. That's not nuthin.
