What Role Did Comcast Play in Keith Olbermann's Suspension?--UPDATED

By karoli

Comcast now owns MSNBC after their acquisition was completed earlier this year, despite protestations from many of us. A look at campaign finance disclosures for several organizations shows that Phil Anschutz,

chairman of Comcast major shareholder and content partner with Comcast, donated large sums of money to the First Amendment Alliance, one of the largest outside groups targeting Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections.

The Anschutz Corporation, wholly owned by Phil Anschutz, gave $50,000 on 9/24/2010 to the First Amendment Alliance. The two candidates targeted by the First Amendment Alliance? Jack Conway and Michael Bennet.

Keith Olbermann gave to Jack Conway's campaign along with Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords.

In addition, the Anschutz family donated $169,900 to Republican candidates and committees during the 2010 election cycle, according to Open Secrets.

Additionally, Comcast Corporation has contributed $125,000 to the Republican Governors' Association in the 2010 cycle (as of 9/30/2010).

14. Dish Network is also a good choice!
And they've had FSTV on for many years longer than DirecTV has had.

Don't know how much management is left over from the times that DirecTV was owned by NewsCorp, but I still don't trust them fully, though they've made better moves lately now.

38. I'm trying to remember the details of the sale, but I think it might have been "creative"
Edited on Sat Jan-22-11 01:04 PM by cascadiance
I think the company Newscorp sold DirecTV to also traded a lot of its own stock back to NewsCorp, so that though NewsCorp doesn't control DirecTV directly any more, they could control them indirectly through controlling of DirecTV's parent company moreso. It's a minority stake I think, but I think it might be a pretty sizable minority stake, which might get them enough votes to "control" things, especially if others with votes are aligned with NewsCorp in some fashion as well.

I'm guessing that that sort of game is a typical way that many companies "hide" their control over our media now. I think I had the same concern over XM radio, which was also owned by NewsCorp as well and "sold off". And of course now XM and Sirius are now merged as well providing a satellite radio monopoly.

Happily there's a Clear tower close to my house and I'm getting excellent reception and service. I know they can be pretty spotty based on location, so I lucked out I guess.

21. So. Will AT&T or Verizon be the mediums of choice???
I suggest that research is done first. The amounts of money that the article mentioned is peanuts compared to the millions that AT&T and Verizon contributed to either the republican party of republican candidates. Comcast has a lot of democrats in high levels in the company. My guess is that the major stockholder than is mentioned in the article got involved funding Comcast when Comcast grew too fast a decade or more back and ran into financial troubles. More recent investors are either democrats or sensitive to democratic causes.

FUCK YOUR right wing greedy evil bullshit!!

May Sekhmet awaken and hunt Comcast the paper monster and crash the satellites with her claw..
May the greedy CEO and their propaganda be reduced to silence in the face of truth
talking to power, rendering the powerful, powerless.

May this consolidation of media, power and resources be broken and taken away from the greedy,
May the few powerful be forced to bow down to the many & exploited.
May those who exploit be crushed by the consequences of their own ruthless ambitions.
Reality intrude upon the "beautiful minds" that cause such suffering and censorship.

May the corporate pigs learn to shiver in anxiety from
the thundering voices of all the minds and hearts of
whom they want to control betray and abuse for profit!!

Sekhmet,
Lady of the Flaming Mane,
Lady of the Silent Roar Within,
Finder of the Ways,
She Who is the Flame Within the Darkness,
She Who Perseveres in Time of Struggle,
Sekhmet, who rouseth the people..

Hear me now..and send your arrows of hekau
that pierce the hearts of those
who's greed and ambition to control
is never satisfied,
the paper lie that is Comcast.

Reveal the truth, restore Maat to this land.

I feel better now.

29. This Revolution WILL be televised!
Comcast now represents the greatest threat to liberty amongst all of the predatory corporations.
They control media and access.
The line in the sand has been drawn.

With apologies to the great Gil Scott-Heron, this revolution IS being televised.
It is incumbent upon all of us to develop alternative sources for information now - even if it requires us to sign off the grid (internet/television) until we can find an alternative.

We're in deep shit with the SCOTUS decision and the colossally dangerous precedent set by the takeover of media by this conglomerate.
Soon, it will be Comcast and News Corp. only. The only power we have now is in our collective ability as consumers. We must use it and use it well.

I advocate all non-violent and non-criminal means possible to stop these enemies of freedom. Our best alternative now is economic.

DISH is owned by Murdoch, so let's not even go there. Honestly, I don't know why anyone pays for TV anymore. Between internet content and Netflix one can see just about anything they want to without lining a right winger's pockets.
