Obama Issues Veto Threat On Bush Tax Cuts
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/11/obama-will-veto-attempts-to-avoid-automatic-cuts-and-full-extension-of-bush-tax-cuts-senior-official.php?ref=fpa

Brian Beutler November 22, 2011, 9:40 AM 12437 192

President Obama has threatened to veto any legislation that attempts to eliminate the automatic penalties for Super Committee failure. But on January 1, 2013 — the same day the automatic, across the board spending cuts are scheduled to take effect — all of the Bush tax cuts are set to expire. And the White House plans to use the threat of full expiration the exact same way they’re using the threat of sequestration — to force Republicans to accept a higher tax burden on wealthy Americans.

“He won’t sign a full extension,” said one Senior Administration Official at a White House background briefing for reporters on the Super Committee.

3. Anyone, R or D or neither, who claims to care about the deficit should be for Bush tax cut repeal
And that means ALL of them, not just those on the rich. Now, there are reasonable arguments to oppose raising taxes on middle and low income Americans at this time. But it's pretty inconsistent to insist on no tax increases while insisting on deficit reduction in a bad economy. Frankly I think the whole deficit reduction in DC is bullshit and a cover for ideological agendas like privatizing Medicare and Soc. Sec.

5. Win, lose, or draw

The President is going to go down swinging.

We have to join him in this epic battle. He is drawing a line in the sand and he needs us now more than ever.

We have to be pragmatic and work within the only political structure available. We have to identify the views that philosophically align the most with ours, stop the bleeding, and go from there. Major reforms need time to conceive and develop. They cannot realistically be implemented quick enough to mitigate the downward spiral. We are in triage mode.

The alternative to not working with the immediate political tools at hand is.........

7. One ting about reprinting old news with a new date
copy/paste doesn't require any thought or effort.

Last go round of this, he didn't even get a 1:1 concession on unemployment.

I'll believe this when I see it.

8. Given this (R) Congress + the Cowardly DLCrats I could see them actually overriding his veto
but maybe that is part of the strategy. That would at least be more respectable than the capitulation approach we saw last year.

I think we all respect fight and lose much more than cower and capitulate.

11. "We are going to roll back the Bush tax cuts for the welathiest Americans."
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=14218969

Time and again during his presidential campaign, Barack Obama was unequivocal: "We are going to roll back the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans."

But when the chips were down, now-President Obama blinked and backed away.

Twice in less than nine months, Obama has shelved his pledge in deadline-pressing negotiations with congressional Republicans. Obama insists he still is determined to find new revenue by making taxpayers who make more than $200,000 and big corporations pay more, but frustrated liberals say he has already missed key opportunities.

Inaction on taxes and his willingness to consider structural changes to Medicare and Social Security, long-cherished Democratic programs, have strained relations with some Democratic lawmakers and liberal backers who complain Obama has been too willing to backtrack from his positions. The increasingly urgent twists and turns over raising the government's debt ceiling placed Obama's concessions in sharp relief.

13. He will not back down

If we use collective voice to prop him up. He needs support from his cabinet, the Democrats in Congress, and of the general populace.

He needs to surround himself with true allys. As Chris Matthews described, "We must be able to take a few punches and deliver a few of our own"

We have to get energized for President Obama to stop the bleeding.

18. Yea, he has clearly said for years now that he wants the lower/middle class portion extended.
Edited on Fri Nov-25-11 10:11 PM by phleshdef
He is threatening to let the tax cuts expire for everyone, at all income levels, if they won't accept an extension that excludes wealthier incomes.
