Is what's happening out there.

X-Boxes and Netbooks and Big Screen TVs, all effective tools for promoting further consumption.

Just an observation.

:hi:

:P

Happy Black Friday!

3. True. I'm fascinated, however, by how much of it is NOT essential materials...
I see some shoe sales, etc., but don't see anything about big FOOD sales, or things that really really make us healthy (physically or spiritually).

5. I slept in
Put up Christmas decorations with my kid, made my wife breakfast in bed, and am now barbecue smoking a turkey. Now that they're taking a nap, I'm playing video games and surfing the Internet. Later I plan on taking the dogs to the dog park and reading a book. Why would I trade this wonderful day for the opportunity to get a discount on something I probably don't even need?

I just look at pictures of the black Friday shoppers and feel kind of sorry for them.

6. Yeah, you're going to have a food sale right after people eat a massive Thanksgiving dinner.
Worst marketing ever. ;)

7. Lots of staples and grains as Christmas gifts in your world?
You know, unless those shoppers are after things you do not have, criticizing the need for a bargain is all you are doing. "I mean, I also have a computer and a flat screen, but I got them on the first day they came out, not NOW!" That is the essence of the argument. You already have yours and don't need to line up for savings. Me either. Does that make us better or richer?

10. Yes, as a matter of fact, there are.
for 2 reasons.

I don't have money to spend.
I am willing to make things to give people (soups, jellies, curried things)

And they appreciate it more. (or at least they are polite enough to pretend)

My computers are all at least 6 years old, one of them is 12 (and has been refurbished since we got it) . The one I'm using right now was a trade for 50.00 worth of groceries for some folks I was shopping for because they had both gotten injured in an accident and couldn't go for themselves. I needed a laptop, they wanted to get rid of it...we both got a benefit.

I buy large TVs from Habitat or the local thrift store for 25 to 50 bucks, depending on size and quality.

These people don't NEED the things they are buying and they certainly aren't required to buy them new.

I don't judge people for wanting a deal (being of that stripe myself). I do judge them for polluting the world (that we all need to co-inhabit) in countless ways by insisting on the best, newest, shiny thing that will be supplanted by the next best, newest, shiny thing in a few months.

It makes me neither better nor richer. But that's a red herring in the argument anyway.

11. Wow. OK. There are actually quite a few terrific gifts of love, from the heart, like baked goods..
..and preserves, and sometimes just hugs!

Happy Holiday to you and to yours, Bluenorthwest!

4. Look up interview with George Romero
"Dawn of the Dead" was intended as satire of American consumerism.

That's why it takes place in a mall.
