Give something (or two) that embarrasses you about your state:
My state: Wisconsin

Things that embarrass me: Scott Walker and Cheesehead Hats. (Though Walker definitely has #1 priority.)

Edited on Sat Nov-26-11 09:57 AM by The Velveteen Ocelot
The only reason he's not AS embarrassing as Bachmann is that he hasn't had enough time and national exposure. Maybe the residents of his district will wise up and 86 his dumb ass at the next election. I still can't believe they elected that douchenozzle over Jim Oberstar.

46. Richard Mellon Scaife.
Edited on Fri Nov-25-11 10:42 AM by blue neen
:hi:

"The reclusive Scaife, 78, is heir to the Mellon banking fortune, and number 332 on Forbes' 2010 list of the 400 wealthiest folks in America."

"Through his Carthage Foundation and the Sarah Scaife Foundation, Scaife helps bankroll a number of far-right and nativist groups, such as the Heritage Foundation, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (which was behind writing SB 1070), NumbersUSA, the Center for Immigration Studies, and Judicial Watch (see "FAIR-y Tales," Terry Greene Sterling, December 2)."

"According to the progressive Media Matters Action Network, the Scaife family foundations mentioned above have given $8.7 million to Judicial Watch since 1997, making Scaife Judicial Watch's primary benefactor."

"Interestingly, it was not long after I asked Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton about the source of J.W.'s funding during a recent phone interview that he hung up on me."

:puke:

And, what you mentioned is hardly the most embarrassing stuff. I find it more embarrassing that Gov. Soul Mate was replaced by someone who makes many of us miss Gov. Soul Mate. That woman is an idiot, to grossly understate things.

And, my current rep, along with "You Lie" Boy, and the rest of the repug contingent, all run to the chapel to consult with their invisible friend in the clouds before major votes, rather than consulting with their constituents. Whack jobs all of them. And, that's not counting our two Senators. Few people are more revolting than those two.

Then there's the horse molester, who came back and molested the same horse right after getting out of jail for the first molestation...

And, yes Charleston is Awesome to the 12th power. It definitely helps that they have the most awesome mayor in the Southeast. Which brings up yet another embarrassment: These idiots could have had him as their governor, yet they instead chose David Weasely...err...Beastly...errr...Beasley. Now THERE is a true waste of human flesh if I ever saw one.

22. Terry Branstad
When he was talking about Special Education in the context of Iowa's new education initiative, he referred to Special Education children being educated for "menial" occupations. I know it was a slip of the tongue, but it was very funny.

The lack of Virtual Education opportunities in the state for middle/high schoolers. Virtual education opportunities are controlled by the local school districts, and they, in some cases, will not even approve classes in which I will pay for let alone giving opportunities to take such classes on the state's dime (which should save dollars in the long term).

36. Is "virtual education" the same as "distance learning?"
I don't know what "virtual education" is.

I do know that Branstad closed down dozens of employment offices, and replaced them with computer kiosks for people to use for job searches, supposedly.

So instead of a human being who can assess an applicant's job skills, and can explain what employment opportunities are available, the jobless person is presented with a damn computer, and is supposed to navigate his way through god-knows-what bureaucratese on-line to search for a job.

Makes me think that Terry may have a relative or two selling computers and/or computer kiosks, yanno?

I know he is against the closing of low-volume post offices, because he's the landlord of a bunch of the buildings they're housed in, and he likes the rent checks. Just a classy guy, overall.

a Governor who just put a stop to capital punishment during his term, no sales tax, no self-serve gas stations (a plus for this old lady), the Healthy Kids Program, providing affordable health care for children, and the most extraordinary scenery from border to border both ways. Yeah, I know, that's not political, but a lot of the reasons our rivers, ocean shores, state parks, and historic sites have been preserved are because of wise decisions made by our politicians. One thing that does embarrass me is the passage of Measure 36 in 2004, which amended our constitution to ban same-sex marriages. (Thank GWB for that one.) Lots of RW conservative types especially in rural areas, another source of dispair for me, but hey--we have a progressive radio station in Portland, that hotbed of liberalism. Plug for KPOJ!

Not to mention, I participated in an Occupy march a few weeks ago here in Central Oregon, and there was not a police officer in sight!

Blessings and Happy Day After Thanksgiving! (Refuse to say Black Friday--oops!)

Edited to say, meant to respond to OP. Another oops!

180. Ah, yes, the bottle bill. Another landmark piece of legislation.
Not to mention saving the beaches and scenic waterways for public use--the list goes on and on! I'm between Madras and Bend. Have been to Lakeview often--"Tallest Town in Oregon"! I like to eat at the restaurant downtown that has all the arrowheads on the walls. And I know the Rogue Valley area well---glorious indeed! Have been to almost every part of my adopted state in the past 44 years, love every inch. Nice to meet a former Oregonian! :toast:

As bad as Sarah was, Gov. Sean Parnell(Koch plant) was really the force behind removing her from power so he could take over.

Sean Parnell use to work for the company that defended Exxon in the big oil spill!

Then he went on to be head lobbyist for Conoco Phillips!

Now he is our gov, and still working for Conoco Phillips, trying to reverse the raise in taxes on the oil companies that Sarah implemented.

I think if people in the Lower 49 knew more about Sean Parnell, they would rank him right up there with Scott Walker, Rick Scott, John Kasich, et al. Definitely a Koch plant, also affiliated with ALEC. And why does he hate salmon?

Or maybe even Henry Hyde himself, Mr. Youthful Indiscretion as he hunted Bill Clinton during the impeachment.

Honestly though, IL isn't a Rethug wasteland. For sure there are pockets but overall its fine.

218. I KNOW.
Mr. Blago was originally supposed to be the guest on "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!" (Costa Rica edition) but hello? Federal indictment? can't leave the country? So Lady Blago went in his place (at half the price). She did the usual undignified things on the show--but this was definitely the oh-no-you-di'n't money shot.

She was seen in a video clip later, weeping and wailing, "I DID IT BECAUSE I LOVE MY CHILDREN!"

I am periodically humiliated by the political news coming from Ok. The state that I vote from, where my husband is from and where I lived for 4 years before I became an expat, is Florida. Also humiliating.

It would be easier to list a few things that I'm not embarrassed about from Ok. Will Rogers and Woodie Guthrie. If I thought about it for a few hours, I could probably come up with a few more non- embarrassments, but I'm not willing to invest that time just now.

213. Contest is over: Phil Hart
Phil Hart is an Idaho state representative from Athol. Among his atrocities:

Stole logs from state school endowment land to build his home: http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2010/oct/18/hart-admits-mistake-96-timber-theft/

Wrote a book explaining that wages and salaries are not income, therefore are not taxable and that the income tax as currently collected is unconstitutional: http://www.constitutionalincome.com/

After writing the book that says income taxes aren't constitutional, stopped paying his: http://m.spokesman.com/stories/2011/jun/08/hart-taking-tax-case-idaho-supreme-court/

Oh, and he takes out an ad in my paper every Veterans Day expressing his support for the troops. I am sorry, Phil, but the number-one form of support our troops need is a vast amount of tax revenue to pay for the beans, bullets and band-aids they need to do their jobs.

We have LOTS of things to be embarrassed about in Idaho. Every Republican politician is a source of great entertainment. But Phil Hart tops them all.
