There must be something wrong with my Little Weiner-Dog.
He just walked away from a fresh turkey liver.

This is a creature that ate anything that didn't eat him first.

I'm just confused and frightened right how. What does it mean?

18. When my dogs were ill and not hungry, my vet had me cook liver for them.
Just the odor is supposed to get them interested in eating...

20. No, liver is good for them, the last meal I cooked for my dog...
the night before I was going to put her down was chicken liver. When she smelled it cooking, her nose was twitching. She was blind, and I sat her on my lap and hand fed it to her. I got liver flavored licks once it was all gone.

The reason, I put her down, she was 17, blind, deaf and was suffering from congestive heart failure.

2. Hope it's not parvo, watch him closely.
Had a neighbor whose dog got parvo (later died) and my brothers dog got it (tough little dog, survived), seems to be surging or maybe it's just coincidence.

Nope, none of the symptoms. I think he's just been replaced by an alien robot in a dog suit.

24. why were these dogs not vaccinated against parvo?
It's one of the most important necessary vaccines there is for dogs. That shit is deadly evil crap and extremely highly contagious. It also has an amazing ability to survive in the environment in the soil from the original fecal matter that was infected and can survive extreme hot and cold temperatures.

6. You don't understand... it doesn't matter.
Dachshunds eat whole live animals if they can get a hold of them.

23. and they shouldn't
Live animals carry all kinds of parasites you don't want getting into your dog. So don't let him catch and eat live animals. Meat from the store is probably carrying salmonella and other gross things which is why it needs to be cooked thoroughly and anything it came in contact with cleaned thoroughly. So don't let him eat raw meat from the store.

5. It means he's not interested because its not part of his usual diet.
For a dog who was used to organ meat it would be fine. Especially if he were used to a raw diet.

7. It depends ....
1) How much food had he already eaten today before you gave him the turkey liver?

2) Is the liver fully cooked?
My little dog doesn't like anything that is not cooked well-done - when I cook steak I cook mine medium, but I have to leave his piece on the grill a bit longer until it is well-done.

3) Maybe he just doesn't like liver. Sometimes the can food that my dog eats has some bigger chunks than normal pieces of something in there and he leaves the chunks in his bowl and will only eat the ground up part of what was in the can.

4) Little dogs are finicky.
When mine was younger he would eat somethings that he won't eat now, and somethings that he wouldn't eat before he now eats.
He'll eat a piece of McDonalds hamburger, but not one from Jack in the Box. He'll eat dark chicken, but not white chicken.

I hope he is okay.
Let us know how it goes.

12. Thanks!
Thing is, this little guy is almost pure carnivore but will often eat anything that falls on the floor.

We used to joke about how dropping a live grenade wouldn't be a big problem because he'd turn it into poop in seconds.

That's okay though. I posted this more for the self-indulgent humor than real concern. There really was concern though. He ate a nest of baby bunnies once, so I really am surprised.

27. my dog wouldn't eat braunsuager (sp)
I doubt it means anything more than he was waiting for turkey and dressing. If he ate the turkey or any other foods just fine, then don't worry about it. He's fine, you're fine, the turkey was fine.

Or else Oscar told him a scary story about turkey livers.

13. Process of elimination.
Offer him something he never turns down (some sort of treat he likes). If he eats that, it's the product (liver). If he doesn't then on to the next step.

31. It was weird. He's never turned anything down before.
He was eating everything else, just didn't like the liver.

Very strange for a dachshund.

14. How is he acting otherwise?
Drinking? Playing? Eating other things?

I get really paranoid about my two girls after losing an older dog suddenly in 2008.

I watch how they act, etc., and after some close observation I can tell whether there is anything worrisome going on.

Keep an eye on your little guy, make sure he's drinking enough water, but also watch to see if he's drinking a whole lot of water, too...more than normal for him.

Could just be the liver smelled a little "off" to him. Hope he's OK...

21. If he doesn't eat anything else soon, get him to a vet immediately.
I don't wish to frighten you but this could be potentially serious. My dog died in June and one of the symptoms she showed a few days before her death was not eating.

25. My Dachshund turned down liver on Thanksgiving seven years ago
My other dog, a Labrador retriever (and the nicest being on the planet) died on Thanksgiving seven years ago. (Worst Thanksgiving, ever)

Because we had friends coming over, my wife still made Thanksgiving dinner, even though our heart wasn't in it.

Usually, when she made turkey, she would break the liver in half and give half to each dog. Since there was only one dog to eat it now, she gave the whole thing to the Dachshund.

That Dachshund carried the liver over to the Labrador's body, and tried to offer her half.

Others will eat all of it.

There just might be something about it that it doesn't trust.
