Ghandi was right
"First they ignore you" - MSM was very slow to cover OSW

"Then they laugh at you" - What do these protesters even want? They should grab a bar of soap and go get a job! Bankers hanging mocking signs,

"Then they fight you" - Camps getting broken up. Broken laptops and smashed belongings. Pepper spray & batons.

How did he finish that quote...? Hang in there guys & gals! :hi:

1. Satyagraha. Gandhi's rule for campaigns:
1. Harbour no anger
2. Suffer the anger of the opponent
3. Never retaliate to assaults or punishment; but do not submit, out of fear of punishment or assault, to an order given in anger
4. Voluntarily submit to arrest or confiscation of your own property
5. If you are a trustee of property, defend that property (non-violently) from confiscation with your life
6. Do not curse or swear
7. Do not insult the opponent
8. Neither salute nor insult the flag of your opponent or your opponent’s leaders
9. If anyone attempts to insult or assault your opponent, defend your opponent (non-violently) with your life
10. As a prisoner, behave courteously and obey prison regulations (except any that are contrary to self-respect)
11. As a prisoner, do not ask for special favourable treatment
12. As a prisoner, do not fast in an attempt to gain conveniences whose deprivation does not involve any injury to your self-respect
13. Joyfully obey the orders of the leaders of the civil disobedience action
14. Do not pick and choose amongst the orders you obey; if you find the action as a whole improper or immoral, sever your connection with the action entirely
15. Do not make your participation conditional on your comrades taking care of your dependents while you are engaging in the campaign or are in prison; do not expect them to provide such support
16. Do not become a cause of communal quarrels
17. Do not take sides in such quarrels, but assist only that party which is demonstrably in the right; in the case of inter-religious conflict, give your life to protect (non-violently) those in danger on either side
18. Avoid occasions that may give rise to communal quarrels
19. Do not take part in processions that would wound the religious sensibilities of any community

8. Quite difficult rules indeed, but if I am not mistaken...
Reverend Martin Luther King tried very hard himself, and worked diligently to convince his followers to abide by such rules.

In order for a movement like OWS to be successful it must, in the long run, be seen as unimpeachable, unstoppable, and always on the side of justice.

Any lashing out or violent retaliation will just give fodder to the opposition to build their case against your cause and will ultimately topple it.

One reason that many Democratic leaders shun association with the movement at this point is that it has not yet proven its resilience in the face of the attacks against it. From what I've seen the conduct of the majority has been impressive overall, but there are some few who continue to be "rotters" (not to mention the lies perpetrated by Faux News and others of the "RW Wurlitzer media").

Even Elizabeth Warren, who first endorsed the cause, has now backed away to some degree, and this is certainly not good.

Following Gandhi's rules to the letter actually could vouchsafe the movement's success. This remains to be seen, however. Peace!

9. Nice quote, but where did Ghandi actually say that?
Why must great lines be attributed to the historically famous to give them great meaning?

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2011/0603/Political-misquotes-The-10-most-famous-things-never-actually-said/First-they-ignore-you.-Then-they-laugh-at-you.-Then-they-attack-you.-Then-you-win.-Mohandas-Gandhi

8. 'First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they attack you. Then you win.' - Mohandas Gandhi

This line is probably the best summary of Gandhi's philosophy of satyagraha as you can get in 16 words. But there's no evidence that the Great Soul ever said this.

We don't know where this quote came from, but it is strikingly similar to something that the trade unionist Nicholas Klein gave in a 1914 address to the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America in Baltimore:

"First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. And then they attack you and want to burn you. And then they build monuments to you. And that, is what is going to happen to the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America."

13. Because the important thing is whether those lines are quotation or paraphrasing.
Got it.
