Neutrino experiment repeat at Cern finds same result
Neutrino experiment repeat at Cern finds same result

The team which found that neutrinos may travel faster than light has carried out an improved version of their experiment - and confirmed the result.

If confirmed by other experiments, the find could undermine one of the basic principles of modern physics.

Critics of the first report in September had said that the long bunches of neutrinos (tiny particles) used could introduce an error into the test.

The new work used much shorter bunches.

1. Wonderful and awe-inspiring
A thousand years from now, if humankind is still humankind at that point, I wonder if we'll still be peering into the void and wondering what it's basically all about.

3. Yes, we will. No doubt about it.
Fascinating. I'm still a bit skeptical of this result, but if true, it's pretty much back to the drawing board for SR, and who knows what the implications would be for GR.

6. Something important to keep in mind...
It's still too early to rewrite the physics books:

"It has been posted to the Arxiv repository and submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics, but has not yet been reviewed by the scientific community."

High-energy physicists will be chewing over this for years just to look for all the ways it could be in error, just to make sure that future research on it has a sound footing.

7. Everybody chill on this right now...
Seriously this means nothing yet. Until it has been independently verified it can not be taken seriously.
