LRAD Defends ‘Sound Cannon’ Use At Occupy Wall Street
LRAD Defends ‘Sound Cannon’ Use At Occupy Wall Street

Occupy Wall Street supporters have blasted the New York Police Department’s use of Long Range Acoustic Devices to respond to the civil disobedience actions that sprang up throughout Manhattan on Thursday.

“So it’s official: NYPD is using LRAD sound cannons. Usually used during combat, they send harmful, pain inducing tones over long distances,” tweeted the Occupied Wall Street Journal account.

“LRAD works according to the same principle as that old Memorex commercial. Your skull is the wine glass and the cops are Ella Fitzgerald,” tweeted Anon Street Medics.

Photos of an LRAD being carried around by an NYPD officer were snapped by Joshua Paul, an Android developer on the ground during Friday’s clashes.

1. We were warned of this years ago when it was purely in the realm of

US to Use Microwave Weapons On America Citizens
http://www.viewzone.com/microwave.html

"If we're not willing to use it here against our fellow citizens, then we should not be willing to use it in a wartime situation," said Wynne. "(Because) if I hit somebody with a nonlethal weapon and they claim that it injured them in a way that was not intended, I think that I would be vilified in the world press."

4. There is no justification for using this "weapon"
at all - especially on citizens expressing their constitutional rights to free speech, assembly, etc.

Seriously - who is the enemy here?

5. so
the police should just stand back and let everyone go and do whatever they want? At some point there is a middle ground for both sides, not being there I do not know first hand who is stepping over the line. But in checking news sources that cover both sides I think each have at times gone to far.

7. OWS is a peaceful movement.
Edited on Fri Nov-18-11 12:24 PM by Avalux
There have been ZERO reports of protesters with weapons; there have been a few rare incidences of troublemaking. These are unarmed citizens of the US exercising their constitutional right to assemble and free speech.

Please justify law enforcement's use of riot gear, hitting with batons, shooting rubber bullets, tear gas, sound cannon, restricing media coverage and arrests without charges on these citizens.

Go ahead, I dare you.

8. We shouldn't be using this shit on our own people!!!
We shouldn't be using it anywhere, not even on lab rats.

What is it that people do not understand that OWS is NOT about violence but violence is used against peaceful demonstrations.

Next you'll be trying to tell me that using dirty bombs would be a fine method of crowd control.

12. So go join in an #OWS march and get the full story for yourself.
The only side stepping over the line are the cops.

The protesters have remained peaceful in the face of unprovoked full on police brutality and quite frankly I wonder how they do so.

19. Yes, "the police should just stand back ...
... and let everyone go and do whatever they want", when what the people are doing is not illegal. Their job is to protect law-abiding citizens, not hurt them.

25. The police brought this on themselves...
all of the protesters were peaceful until the police started using riot control tactics. Riot control tactics? WTF?

It started with the police firing rubber bullets and tear gas canisters into the crowd. One of which hit a Vet and cracked his skull and a rubber bullet hit a woman in the side of the jaw.

everything entered into a whole new reality when law enforcement uses riot control tactics against peaceful protesters.

what's at issue here is very simple, the police have no ideas, concepts or training to deal properly with peaceful non-violent protesters, they treat everything and everyone as if they are a nail.

And you might also want to read up on your first amendment rights.

31. If you took a careful look at video of the protests you would see that most --
-- of the incidents of violence are violent cops attacking peaceful protestors who are doing nothing.

I'm sure there are some incidents of people doing things they shouldn't, that might get them arrested, but I haven't seen them. I have read about one or two. But in most of the arrests I've seen, the cops have been way over the top, being violent, inflicting unnecessary pain, shoving peoples' faces into the pavement -- people who were trying to cooperate with their arrests.

Over and over and over again it's there for you to see.

22. I was reading how people can protect themselves
Apparently, a souped-up laser pointer can poke a hole in an LRAD, which would make the sound be heard by the people deploying it.

That might be BS, but a lot of people were suggesting some sort of parabolic reflector, to send the sound back to the riot police.

Idjits, if you are going to use toys like this DO NOT step in front of it. The brunt of the attack was taken by a line of cops, to a point comedic.
