KIRO 7 has confirmed that the city of Tacoma is considering big cuts within the city's police and fire departments in a effort to slash a multi-million dollar budget shortfall. The cuts begin next month, and may not end there.
If the layoffs take place, the police department could lose one quarter of its staff, and most of the positions cut would be commissioned police officers, KIRO 7 South Sound Reporter Kevin McCarty reported.
When McCarty first began reporting the story, figures were in the dozens for police and firefighters, but those numbers have gone even higher since.
By the end of the year, city officials are considering laying off a total of 165 city employees, including 56 employees and officers from the police department. The fire department could lose 47 positions -- a large number of those would be firefighters.
