Buying and selling unscreened breast milk
Buying and selling unscreened breast milk

Some mothers aren't able to produce enough breast milk to feed their babies.

I wasn't producing enough and wanted to find another option," said one mother.

For some, that option is buying breast milk online, but with convenience comes risk.

Tonight at 11 p.m., News10 investigates the latest trend of buying and selling unscreened breast milk from strangers.

1. "Wet nurses" were quite common in the past
They're still around, actually, though not as popular as they were in the days before "formula".

3. Not unusual 30 years ago -
- my daughter was premature 30 years ago and was in NICU. I had TONS of milk and pumped for her. As breast milk is much easier to digest than formula, I also pumped for any other infant that would benefit from breast milk. 30 years ago the mother only had to sign a release to allow their child to have my breast milk. I didn't undergo any exams or fill out any medical forms, the doctors only recommended that that I not eat chocolate or gassy foods. That was many years ago and things are sure different now.

Kinda' cool to think my breast milk has fed about 20 infants, though.
