Airport scanners that 'strip' passengers naked are banned over fears they cause cancer

Europe has banned controversial airport 'strip-search' scanners over fears the X-ray technology could cause cancer.

Experts have found the body scanners emit low doses of radiation and the EU has told member states not to install them until the risks are assessed. They will be completely banned in April if experts rule they are dangerous.

Millions of people worldwide are believed to have passed through the security scanners. In the UK passengers are required to do so if asked.

1. They should all be replaced with the kind that doesn't emit radiation.
They should never have installed those in the first place, since there has always been a better alternative.

3. The article says that Millimeter Wave machines will be allowed
That's a relief! Sense prevails. It's the backscatter machines that are dangerous.

2. Of course they are dangerous.
At the dentist office the technician leave the room when taking an x ray of a tooth. One tiny inch sized x ray and I'm wearing a lead apron.

But a full body scan is ok. Sure it is.

4. Plus it is radiation concentrated on the skin. They calculated it incorrectly
and when it's calculated for just the skin then it's a big dose. Unwise for women who have had breast cancer or .. men who want children!

5. I have Melanoma-my Dr at UCSF told me over a year ago to NOT go thru these nor allowing my children!
Edited on Thu Nov-17-11 08:34 PM by Pachamama
This is because he & other Dr's at the Melanoma clinic are absolutely certain that the intense comcentration on the surface of the skin will be a recipe for making sure Melanoma is on the rise. They told me to opt for full body search if i had to & to warn people. Why do you think the Pilots union & Flight Attendants union fought so hard to get an exemption? They knew that with a daily exposure (even more than once!) would be dangerous! But all the sheeple being herded thru these will all be wondering someday why they have Melanoma when no one in their family ever did. And they wont be able to "prove" it was these exposures. My Dr. was so convinced, he & other Dr.'s sent a letter to Pres. obama warning and saying not to implement these in airports without further studies.

At least the EU cares about its citizenry.....sigh......warn people you know who travel a lot to opt out. Its an inconvenience, but your health is worth it.

6. That's so good they took it seriously and told you the truth
The problem with England is that they forced people to use the backscatter machines - until now. There was no option to opt out as there is here! That shocked me and really made me think twice about visiting there.

7. Yes, thank goodness there was an opt out! If I had gone to the UK, i would have just taken all my
....clothes off then and there and said "see, nothing here folks" and I am not willing to die or have my Melanoma come back. My husband and anyone who knows me knows I would have done that. To hear what the Dr. Told me was all I needed to know. They saved my life 2 years ago. So who am i going to trust? The Dr's who saved my life or the security state "trying to protect me"? :eyes:

8. DH just opted for a patdown
last week in LA. He was treated okay, but told that the scanner exposes you to less radiation than standing in front of a microwave oven. He asked the agent why all the pregnant women were being shuttled past the scanner since it was so safe. No answer.
