Adbusters, the Occupy Wall Street innovator, says movement should wind down and start up in spring

Just hours before the raid on Zuccotti Park, the original godfather of Occupy Wall Street - a Canadian anti-capitalist group - advised the protesters it might be time to wind things down for the winter.

Adbusters, which first proposed an occupation modeled after Egypt’s Tahrir Square uprising, suggested Monday that the time was coming for the protesters to “declare victory” and scale back.

Adbusters suggested Dec. 17 - the three-month anniversary of the movement - as a good day to pack it in until spring.

“Then we clean up, scale back and most of us go indoors while the die-hards hold the camps,” the editors of Adbusters magazine wrote in a “tactical briefing” published online Monday.

1. The next step is to have OWS push out corrupt politicians.
Perhaps a good start would be to get genuine progressives to replace as many blue dogs as possible.

2. Nope. Keep the pressure on --
otherwise momentum is lost.

4. I've been wondering the same for a while now.
It's going to get cold soon and the numbers will dwindle. It makes sense and will put pressure on the politicians since it will coincide with most of the primaries and have staying power through the run-up to November. I'm concerned that it will become marginalized if they try to get through the winter under the current conditions. This may be a "war" of sorts, but it isn't Valley Forge.

7. The women who fought for the right to vote --
stood outside the WH every single day, regardless of weather.

The protests must continue.

14. We also didn't have 24x7 cable "news" back then.
I support the movement and believe it has not only made a difference already but will make even more progress, but if it becomes a joke like the teabaggers then the gains will be marginal at best. The scene from "Life of Brian" at the stadium comes to mind - "Oh, it still exists - he's over there..."

With Christmas, the GLORIOUS GOP debates, and the SuperBowl on the way, the weather isn't the only thing that will undermine sitting it out. By spring, it will be refreshed and something NEW for the so-called "news" channels to focus on. Congress isn't going to do shit until spring anyway and they'll be arguing about the budget and deficit all winter and early spring. Actually, I doubt they'll do shit even when spring arrives, but that's a side issue. If OWS comes out in force once the weather turns nice then the candidates, both Congress and WH, will have no choice but to address the matter and the magnifying glass will be on them by then. It also would give the OWS time to research their rights, get court rulings, and avoid the "protest zone" problems of the shrub's eight years.

5. weather.com predicts rain by 10 pm, although temperatures should continue mild
Rain and showers with decreasing temps for the next two days.

Likely the appeals will take at least that long, hence no entry with tents, tarps, etc.

6. Adbusters
This guy is just one amongst millions. I applaud him for making a call to action, but he doesn't speak for Occupy.

There ARE no leaders; we are ALL leaders.

Occupy Everything.

20. +1000!
The movement is leaderless and momentum will carry it forward and continue to grow, no matter what anyone else thinks.

The movement may transform and manifest in different ways as the weather gets worse, but it will continue.

15. Nope.
Those arrayed against OWS will have time to prepare and the media that is covering it will move on to business as usual along with the politicians and corporations they represent.

setting up squatter communes for the winter, including access to legal services if banks start to get stuffy about having housing stock protected from copper thieves.

How does a movement "wind down"??
Edited on Tue Nov-15-11 05:58 PM by Avalux
And then start up again??

I don't think anyone has control over it at this point, or should. There's no going back.
