In a statement, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he was acting to protect public safety, saying, quote, "Unfortunately, the park was becoming a place where people came not to protest, but rather to break laws, and in some cases, to harm others."

It's a dubious claim to begin with, but swap out "the park" with the name of any city or state and swap out "protest" with any other activity (raising children, conducting business, etc.) and the statement is no less true.
