An Announcement from the Chair of the Berkeley Faculty Senate: Free Speech and "Occupy"
Dear Colleagues,

Divisional Council (DIVCO) strongly supports free speech and nonviolent demonstrations.

We have scheduled a meeting this afternoon, Monday, November 14, 2011, in 105 Stanley Hall at 5:00 PM for faculty to discuss the principles of free speech and the practice of nonviolence. We encourage faculty to discuss these issues with students.

We endorse an investigation of the use of force last week. Should there be a finding that excessive force was used, disciplinary actions must be taken. We also urge those who choose to engage in protest or civil disobedience to do so nonviolently.

We are calling a meeting of the faculty of the Berkeley Division on Monday, November 28, 2011 from 3:00 - 5:00 PM, at which we will consider faculty resolutions on these events. Details about the meeting will be forthcoming soon.

Sincerely,

Bob Jacobsen
Chair, Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate
Professor of Physics
