So the African black rhinoceros is officially extinct

Someone said years back that the rhino will be the extinction event of our generation. They weren't kidding. It's sad that it is such a small news item, it is really sad. What's left, the white rhino and a negligible amount of the Asian variety?

a captive population of animals past the breeding age is, of course, no use in re-establishing a population so the species is effectively extinct as far as i know

don't know anything much about the black rhino

i think there are no breeding females left of the northern white rhino? at least i thought that's what i heard them say at the san diego zoo breeding program...

southern white rhino has a decent sized population in the wild and also in captivity
