Spanish Inquisition and the Conservative movement.
This is one part of my heritage which I have blocked because it's hard for me to accept the cruelty that took place during this period. So, now that I'm revisiting history, a couple of things turned up that I thought was interesting.

The Queen's motto was: One country, one ruler, one faith. I thought that was particularly interesting considering how there's a big push on the right to imply that there's only one legitimate faith in the U.S.

Another interesting parallel was the subject of taxes. At the time that Spain was able to finance an expedition which would discover America, the country was adverse to raising taxes. The way it's believed that they acquired wealth was through the Spanish Inquisition. What that implies to me is that they took over the wealth of the people they targeted for the Inquisition. Jews were one of their targets, though they probably fell under the category of heretics.

This was considered Machiavelli politics.

Well, we've been experiencing Machiavelli politics too. Republicans don't raise taxes, but, for the last ten years, they have allowed deregulation to take place KNOWING that it would lead to corruption. Does anyone really believe they didn't know that what those CEOs were doing was illegal? I don't think so.

Unless we make corrections now, and quickly, the U.S. will see the same fate as the Spanish.

3. I'm not implying that it would be repeated exactly as it happened,
but I do see people intent on repeating the mistakes that the atrocities were founded on.

4. And three months to convert.
Today, I don't think that even conversion would satisfy them.

5. Spain probably got so weak through the 17th century because its sheep
overran the countryside: England could do it more sustainably
