Michael Jackson dies: tribute threads. Joe Paterno fired: celebration threads.
Why the disparity?

2. I can't for the life of me figure out what those two things have in common.
Michael Jackson was a tremendous musician who inspired and entertained millions, and yes we were saddened by his young passing.

Joe Paterno is a college football coach who covered up the molesting of young boys. Yes he should be fired - and lucky he's not criminally charged.

How in the world do you see "disparity"?

9. Crap. I have to drink my coffee before posting.
I actually had put that out of my mind I guess. I don't think he was ever convicted was he? Still I know a lot of folks felt it happened and would likely have the same feelings towards him as Sandusky (and by extension Paterno).

Thanks for pointing this out though, yes, it does bear discussion.

Just like all of the threads were praising Michael Jackson when he died.

12. No one ever walked in and saw MJ raping a child in a shower and then not report it to the police.
Those complicit are very bit as bad as if they had done it themselves.

13. MJ did it, and Joe never saw anything.
"Those complicit are very bit as bad as if they had done it themselves."

MJ did do it himself.

I'm not hear to defend JoePa as I think he is pretty much a POS, but the OP is dead on that there was a celebration of MJ here and there is a butchering of JoePa.

14. MJ was found not guilty by court of law -
It still leaves a lingering doubt in my mind, as I'm sure it does in others, but it's inaccurate to say he "did do it himself".

21. This...and I am still a bit stunned at all the "I LOVED Michael Jackson"
crap that gets posted. I mean, at 12, I wanted to marry him. At 22 I felt sorry for the man he had become. At 39 I shook my head when the jeers at him turned to cheers for him.

23. Let's Treat Our "Friends" The Way We Treat Our "Enemies"
Michael Jackson is as "innocent" of the allegations leveled at him as is Herman Cain. In both cases "hush money" was paid to victims.

Oh, btw- the Paterno-Jackson argument is absurd. Two wrongs don't make a right. Joe Paterno showed grievous indifference and profound misjudgment.

24. I agree with your first part, but the second..
"Oh, btw- the Paterno-Jackson argument is absurd. Two wrongs don't make a right. Joe Paterno showed grievous indifference and profound misjudgment."

I didn't interpret the OP as trying to say JP should be left alone bc MJ was praised here. Rather, I think s/he was pointing out how MJ should have been treated like JP is being treated. At least that was my interpretation. If the OP meant it as a way to protect JP, then it is way out of line.

26. I Don't Understand Paterno. He Should Have Called The Police
Edited on Thu Nov-10-11 10:20 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Two priciples were in competition; loyalty and justice. He chose the former and paid a huge price. There is a point when friendship and loyalty demand too much.

It's just sad...
