Apologies to the Box of Rocks.

Can't wait to see who you vote for next.

17. That's up to you to decide,
seeing as how you seem to have a different set of criteria for what constitutes intelligence in Texas versus, oh, I don't know, Iowa perhaps?

Start your data-search with the Texas forum here and see what happens to your opinion of us.

28. Actually I have a hard time with anyone whose source of pride
is first and foremost their state or country of birth. As far as I'm concerned a person should be proud of what he or she or perhaps someone he or she knows had accomplished. The last Texan who became President did not do a very good job and Perry would not either. I have a lot of relatives who live in Texas and I have nothing against Texans per se. It looks like some of them are very sensitive. I would say something about Iowans but, like I say, the state in which a person was born or in which they live is not as important as he or she is.

29. You seem to be good at making assumptions about people.
Reread what you've written and then take it apart as I'm about to do.

You say you have nothing against Texans per se, yet your initial statement contradicts this:

"I can't understand how any intelligent person could be proud to be a Texan."

Again, you don't seem to know many Texans or you wouldn't make such a statement. People can live here and not be Texans, too. Or they can become Texans even if not born here. It's a state of mind and has more to do with the state as a whole than just our politics.

You're also disregarding that a person's surroundings, their environment, has a big impact on who they are. I dare say that I would not be the man I am today had I been born in California, or Iowa or Hawaii. And really, I probably wouldn't be as sensitive to this as I am now. Why, you may ask? Because on DU, Texas remains the biggest whipping boy and recipient of unadulterated hate than any other region in the world. If you don't believe me, then you haven't been paying close enough attention. We've earned the right to be sensitive with that kind of attitude all around us, your own included.

30. I don't hate Texas or Texans. I am sure the average Texas
politician compares pretty well to my Rep. Steve King, whose represents everything I oppose in politics. And just because you are a Texan doesn't mean you are better than someone who isn't a Texan. Many wars haave been fought because one people thought they were better than another people. THe original OP was about Rick Perry's supposed lack of intelligence. Do you support him because he is a Texan?

32. Most people that call themselves Texans don't think they are better
than anyone else. Like me, they just love their state. I don't expect you to understand from how you're going on about it, misinterpreting things.

And again, you're assuming that I think all Texans are great, including in their politics. I don't know where you're getting that, other than by assumption and preconceived ideas about us.

Also, while the OP was about Parry's lack of intelligence, you decided it was best to insult ALL Texans by questioning how we could call ourselves intelligent and still be proud to be Texan. We're people, just like everyone else in the world. We just happen to use a label for ourselves that seems to strike a bad chord in you and too many others around here. Get over the assumptions and broadbrushes and you may find just how good our friendship can be.

Rural Hawai'i has a proud paniolo (cowboy) tradition not unlike that of Texas (the Big Island's Parker Ranch is second in size only to the King Ranch, and still has working paniolos!)

the name "KamaAina" is one of those DU time warp things that'll follow me around until next year's election.

Also note that the Big Island has even more Texas-style rural flair; it is, after all, twice the size of all the others combined. Many authentic Maui types are drifting over there, having been priced out of Maui by celebrities like Oprah.

I am still amazed how they went from a progressive, caring, hardworking, classy governor (Ann Richards) to the %$#@wad that wound up ruining our country.

And their current governor is even dumber than the aforementioned %$#@wad.

You can tell a Texas republican that eating shit will lower their taxes and there would be flash mobs at every outhouse in Texas! I shit you not! (okay, bad attempt at a pun)

46. That's pretty much a common trait for most of the GOP
You have to understand that the GOP derives most of its constituency from rural areas in the south who are still afraid that carpetbaggers are going to move in again and take advantage of them. That's why intelligence and education are shunned while stupidity and ignorance are considered virtues. So what you wind up with is someone stupid like Perry or Bush as someone smarter slips their hand up their back.

This despite the near majority of minorities -- who, apparently, in their wisdom DON'T VOTE!1

corporate money.

It doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the Democratic candidates.

Jesus Christ could run for state office and be defeated if he had a D next to his name.

As far as minorities who vote against their interests (or more precisely don't vote at all), why do you think Texas Republicans do everything they can to take money away from education?

26. I agree, I think it says more about 1 party systems
the Republican party has smeared and redistricted the Democratic party into a minority. Having done that they show the problem with 1 party rule. Sure sometimes the 1 party puts up a great leader, a lot of times not so much. Texas has had, and still has good politicians and perhaps when enough robo rethugs wake up or simply the population changes the state will once again at least experience real races for office.

but I will point out that the national Democrats are constantly turning their backs on us, refusing to support or try to help us fight the repubs. Such as their recent decision to drop us from some list of states to support next year.

Like so many DUers, the national Dems seem to forget that we're all in this together.
