Attended a gathering with some of the 1% last night at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts
and Sciences Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. This reception was in honor of a man named Vin Scully, who is better known as "The Voice Of The Dodgers," and was hosted by Russell Goldsmith, Chairman and CEO of City National Bank.

I only attended this gathering because Russell's dad, Bram, asked me to and I happen to love the old guy a lot. I'm not a big sports fan, but I do like tennis, and not being a big sports fan, I didn't know who Vin Scully was and had to google his name to find out.

Anyway, the reason for the thread is this, while mingling at the reception before the program, I was able to hear and partake in, several conversations about our 99% movement and I was pretty happy to find out that many of those attending were not only talking about it, but seem to be getting it.

I heard comments like, "you can only push people so far" and "the system has been rigged against the majority and it needs to change." One wealthy sports figure, matter of fact-ly stated, "I have enough for 50 life times, I don't need anymore tax cuts and the big corporations don't need them either, anymore than they need government welfare subsidies." Wow, and he said it so everyone in ear shot could hear it too.

Several people were discussing how to get the corporate influence and their lobbyists out of our government, and on more than 5 occasions, I heard the name Koch brothers used in very unflattering terms. Two well known actors shared their disgust with the Republicans and Democrats taking money from wall street and other corporations, and a super star singer, who I happen to love love love, said that her son had attended several occupy protests and she was very proud of that.

During a brief one on one with the host, I asked Russell Goldsmith right out, "how do you feel about the Occupy movement?" and he replied, "It's about time." He went on to say, "I'm on the side of the people, without them, no one could have the kind of successes that I have been able to attain....I couldn't have gotten where I am today all by myself, without the support of the people, no one can." He added, "put me in the, tax me more, Warren Buffet category." I laughed, he patted me on the back and I jokingly said, "can I quote you on that?" and he replied, "you know how I feel about being quoted, if you fear it being quoted, don't say it." Yep, I feel the same way.

Russell is a really nice guy, he's a Democrat and he never gives the impression that he thinks he is better than others. He treats people like he wants to be treated and is very approachable, I have always liked and respected the man, he is CEO of an organization that is solid because of the people it employs.

My partner and I do all of our banking and have all of our investments with their wealth management people because of how they treat their employees, and obviously, how they treat their clients. I think we're in good company, as many producers, directors, entertainment executives and big named talent trust their money and investments with City National as well.

It's nice to feel as important as any other person banking with City National Bank and it's nice to know the CEO is a decent and fair man who is on the side of the people. We like a smaller bank where they don't nickle and dime their customers, and their people treat you like they care, because they do, and I am one of those who firmly believes, that comes from the top down.

Just before the reception was about to end, I was introduced to Vin Scully, a very sweet man who was busy making his rounds taking pictures with those at the gathering, I'm not big on having my picture taken, so I casually moved to the side and mingled a while longer until the program began.

I guess what occurred for me at this gathering was, that some of those at the "top," have always gotten it, some are just starting to get it, and as we know, some will never get it...... but, I was cautiously encouraged.

Of course, it's always nice to know, that at many of the functions I attend, the majority of the people there are Democrats or Independents. But, as you know, in any group of 600 people, you are going to have your spoilers. Thankfully, I didn't meet or hear any of those windbags last night.

I guess I just wanted to let you all know, that many at this function were 1%ers talking about Occupy and the 99% movement, it seems to be happening everywhere I go lately, and I believe that's a really good thing for the future of our country, where I have always wished for a less politically motivated, and more people oriented America.

13. And it's ironic
Since that's the only segment of the 1% that gets villified by the right wing.

Those Hollywood elitist liberals. How dare they, you know...make sense, and be grateful for what they have and stand up for those who aren't as fortunate.

fields know that without the middle class they're not going to have the theaters and sports arenas fill up. And if they don't get it, they're just plain stupid. I was in the tv business for 34 yrs and, for the most part, they really are middle class only richer. And most totally understand what their unions have done for them.

86. I have many opportunities to ...
Hobnob with the well heeled. Most of the Hollywood industry folks are good as gold. Most worked their way up and had help along the way. It is a rough biz and they try to take care of each other. They have the noblise obligue attitude where as some 1%ers are nothing but petty tyrants. I love to attend those gathering and I am treated as an equal (be nice, you never know where your next job will come from mentality).

I also happen to attend some GOP 1% to dos. Those I do not like. Food is generally awful and the conversation is deadly dull (and I like economics and am a numbers junkie). Your worth is measured by your wallet size and all the women are very high maintenance (forget swapping recipes for the crab dip).

I know this sounds cliche but it sums up most of my experiences. By the by, my daughter goes to one of those Arts think tank schools in the LA area and I make poor school nurse in Texas wages. Every time I call her I always ask "Who did you see this time". It is always interesting but I will say-they have all been nice to my hard working student daughter. They have freely shared their time and knowledge of the business and scholarship money.

Yes, there are bad things out there, but I have nothing but good things to say.

87. McEnroe, Agassi, & Davenport have supported Dems (though Agassi likes to claim
he's an independent). I would bet that many of the other American pros lean Blue also. And as an international sport, many of the top players' views are far away from today's US right wingers'. Many of them donate a huge amount of time and money (if they are successful enough to have much) to meaningful charitable work, as opposed to "show your face at a kids' hospital once in awhile." One of the many reasons to like watching (and playing) tennis.

They're constantly disparaging the occupy groups for causing hardship for the local businesses. Or they parrot every negative thing being said about them.

I usually just tell them the truth about what's going on and leave them to either look into it or accept the crap they're being fed by the media. I've given up trying to get them to understand. They aren't nasty people. They're just lazy and uninterested. And this is truly the kind of people who talk about dancing with the stars. They literally bring each other up to date. Even the supervisor talks about that program.

Yep. I have a hard time telling if they are the sociopaths that fill Congress or Wall Street, or they are just uninformed. It's easier for whatever reason to be Republican. Dems have been pounded by the press so long, they are 'freaks'.

I have a friend that was in the Navy. Just laughs at the OWS movement, makes thy typical jokes about the less fortunate. The guy was in the Navy. I knew him and a lot of his friends when they where in and they didn't have to do jack shit (between the Iraq wars), and they all made more than me when I had a College Education, and worked for a successful Financial Services firm. One friend even asked me what I make and when he heard, his face turned flush and he let out an "Oh", like he felt my pain!

So the guy I was speaking of has a decent job, I believe still related to the Government, and he has been with his 'sugar Mama' for a long time now, who was an Engineer that worked under Govie Contracts.

So, basically, the guy hasn't had it hard for a long, long, long time and thinks it could never happen to him.

39. Vin Scully is only the greatest baseball announcer in history!
Edited on Wed Nov-09-11 05:00 PM by ellisonz

Vincent Edward Scully (born November 29, 1927) is an American sportscaster, known primarily as the play-by-play voice of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team on Prime Ticket, KCAL-TV and KABC radio. His 62 seasons with the Dodgers (1950–present) is the longest of any broadcaster with a single club in professional sports history.

I'm a movie, books, artsy kinda guy....when other guys got sports things for Christmas, I asked for a tea set and a violin. I met Mr. Scully last night and he was a very nice man, I just didn't know who he was until I got the invite and googled his name......I'm ok with admitting that however it sounds, but it's a little embarrassing lol.

changes, I just want them to happen. I think they use their influence and wealth in different ways than the Republicans, who can't seem to stop themselves from using every means possible, no matter how nefarious or criminal to force their agenda on the rest of us.

I love him! I was actually concerned for him and whether he might regret saying what he said if The Google ever dug up the reference to him here... and then I saw that he's just fine with that, which made me love him more.

:loveya:

I'm actually really happy with my bank (I love the people at my local branch) but if I were shopping for a new one I would go straight to City National on the strength of this story alone.

I wonder how they feel about cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

Many of them are probably big philanthropists.

Our problems are the really not-so-rich folks in Kansas City and BIrmingham who delude themselves into thinking that they are in the top 1%, but who are actually part of the 99% and working against their own interests.

middle-class families, no matter how much money they might have now. And they all worked hard to get where they are. My guess is that most of the 1%ers, like the Koch Bros, were born rich. That's only my speculation, and I'd love to see stats on it.

71. Were they really 1%ers?
Edited on Thu Nov-10-11 09:27 AM by AlbertCat
Or more like the 20%ers....

Y'know, a millionaire can have 4 million or 20 million or 120 million. These are 3 different types of lifestyles. True, they are all nice and secure, but in realty, 4 million puts you in the upper middle class these days.

Of course my favorite point of this wonderful post is a majority "get it". Only in the Koch run, Murdoch run world do they pretend to not understand what the problem is. The 1%ers REALLY ARE only 1%!!!! It doesn't necessarily have to just do with $$$$... it has to do with a mind set, an attitude. Think of going to a beer bash at a trailer park in AL or MS, or a "reception" at a gun & knife tent show in SC. No matter how far from being even an upper middle class millionaire those participants would be, you'd hear all the disparaging talking points spewed over the airways by the Right Wing.

83. Your point is valid
I think your numbers are a tad skewed. You barely need to break a million to be in the top 15% or so. But it's a steep curve from there and to truly be in the 1% you need billions. None the less, I think the larger experience of the OP is valid. There is vastly more support from the higher end of the wealth spectrum than is indicated by the GOP. Buffet isn't the only one. Gates is similarly inclined. Strangely, it tends to be more the folks in and around 10% or so that get an attitude. Well above or below that and it changes fast. It's where the express "get rich, get republican" comes from. Your doctors, lawyers, real estate, etc. are in the top 10%, but no where near the 1%, and they think their primary obstacle is taxes and the government. The folks truly near the 1% know better.

Exceptions? Sure, bring the Koch brothers front and center. But quite honestly, far more of the trouble comes from people who CONTROL large amounts of wealth, other peoples wealth. Which is where the problem with banks and investment firms comes in. They are manipulating our politics with OTHER peoples money, and not always US citizens money.

These are the people who have tens of millions or hundreds of millions and are 99%ers in mind set as well and do positive things with their wealth. You do make a valid point. Thank you.

79. The thing is..
Those who really are against the 99%'ers, other than the ignorant tea-baggers who have absolutely no clue, are just the miniscule 400+ uber-rich who have a political axe to grind. Most of the intelligent people realize that the country is more important than earning the extra buck.

The politicians, like Eric Cantor and Paul Ryan, are just sops; as ignorant as the ignorant tea-baggers, but had the luck of getting some money to be reasonably powerful. Others, probably Boehner and some others, are caught between a rock and a hard place. They're held captive by those who own them.

Great OP and shows that there are 99%ers among the 1% which we knew anyhow, based on the incredible people who have shown their support for this movement over the past several weeks.

Many wealthy celebrities who could just ignore the whole thing since they are 'doing fine', but came out in support of the people, realizing that when even one person is being treated unjustly, it affects all of us.

127. Apologies to the OP Lou...
I tried to send a private message, but apparently lack standing to do so. I foolishly assumed that every Hollywood event must be reported in some Google accessible publication, as well as being noted on the venue calendar (after all, whether public or private, presumably it would be important for the calendar to note the facility is un-available). I should have known better than to let my unbounded cynicism extend to the honesty of DU posters.
