Boneheaded Hospital 'Drill' Brings a Lawsuit
Boneheaded Hospital 'Drill' Brings a Lawsuit

LAS VEGAS (CN) - A hospital ICU director says she was "emotionally traumatized" by being held hostage at gunpoint by a distraught patient - who turned out to be an off-duty police officer performing a "drill" staged by her bosses. The woman says she "believed she was going to die" and asked the gunman if she could call her children, "to say goodbye."

Ourida Diktakis was director of the Intensive Care Unit at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in May 2010 when the gunman, who later identified himself as Charles Yannis, pulled out a gun and pointed it at her.

....

"After a period of time, the gunman put the gun away and announced that it was a 'drill.' He then identified himself as an off-duty Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer," according to the complaint.

She claims Yannis "took pleasure in traumatizing" her and that "There was no point to the 'drill' other than to traumatize staff, patients and visitors and there was no explanation of why it was purportedly conducted".

1. The so-called drill was not only stupid but also irresponsible and dangerous
It's like a sick joke more than a "drill".

The hospital should get sued big time and the cop should receive some type of disciplinary action.

2. This seems idiotic.
If a citizen with a concealed carry had been there, this cop would be dead.

4. I suppose the security thug in Admin couldn't foresee PTSD as a possibility
More evidence that administrators don't always engage their brains before decision making.

of these types of managerial decisions.

You know it took a roundtable of managers thinking something like this up--- and not one of them thought---hey...what if?

The decision makers with this should be fired for errr---just being fucking stupid.

7. indeed
Don't most hospitals have a risk-management department or at least a Doc who oversees RM? If there is one, that person should be gone. If the clucks didn't run it through the RM dept, they should all be fired. Either way, yeah, fucking stupid all the way around.

6. Mr Yannis is lucky to be alive..
There are a lot of things in an ICU which could be potentially deadly, a pencil stabbed into the carotid artery for instance, let alone something like a scalpel.

He'd have to get an upgrade to be a moron.
