1. I don't think that he would have ever actually been the nominee

It seems like the conservatives (i.e. the "anybody but Romney" crowd) are wildly casting about for an alternative to Romney to latch onto, at least until Romney is selected as the eventual nominee when the time comes to actually start primary voting. The biggest surprise so far is that Rick Perry flamed out so quickly and so dramatically. OTOH I NEVER expected Cain to have any real staying power.
