Penn State...WTF?
I have read a little on what has happened at Penn State and I am left speechless.

Sandusky, then defensive coordinator, was under investigation for child sex abuse in 1998 by the university. He retired the same year and was given an office, emeritus coach title, and access to football facilities!

In 2002 Mike McQueary who is now on Penn State's coaching staff saw Sandusky having sex with a kid in one of the Penn State facilities and reports this to Joe Paterno. The university ultimately decides to forbid Sandusky from bringing kids to the campus! But he was still still allowed to run a summer camp under his own name!

Sandusky continues to sexually abuse kids until 2009.

Just wow. Penn State as an institution enabled this guy to carry on these hideous crimes. Everybody likes to talk about Joe Paterno but this is much bigger than Joe. This is about Penn State.

1. Sandusky has an autobiography out..
It's called "Touched; The Jerry Sandusky Story"..

Oh, and it's available in a leather bound edition.

You really can't make this stuff up.

6. Joe Paterno IS Penn State
Been the head coach there since 1966.

The AD and President told him in 2004 that he would be retiring at the end of the season. He told them 'no' and kept on coaching. Nothing happens on that campus athletic department without his approval.

He was told in 2002 that ole Jer was caught raping a child in the shower and did nothing. This will be his legacy, not national titles, not w/l records and not graduation rates. He turned a blind eye.

10. Paterno and the University knew of Sandusky's child sex abuse as early as 1998
This is why he abruptly retired back then. This was a systemic cover up from the very beginning.

17. I know. Don't even get me started on the Ray Gricar disappearance.

1998 was merely a warmup in the shower with no hanky panky.

After 2002, you have to know the cat was out of the proverbial bag and anyone who is anyone in that back road 'burg knew what was happening...

16. Paterno didn't "do nothing"
He reported it to his supervisor, which was what he was legally obligated to do. There is universal agreement that that was not enough, but it's different from doing nothing.

19. And I am sure the history books will be kind.
Grad student tells him Jerry is butt-fucking a 10 year old in the team facility and JoePa reports it as "an incident" then later notes the grad student (now one of his assistant coaches) was "distraught".

Like I said - he did nothing, unless you want to count whitewashing eyewitness testimony to protect his buddy.

8. The local reaction is shock & disgust.
I haven't talked to anyone in the area who isn't just thunderstruck by all of this. Everyone here has always known that the football program was a HUGE cash cow, but we never would have thought that JoePa and the PSU hierarchy were capable of something this heinous.

This is 100% surreal! Like so many other infamous events in history, the cover-up is what eventually causes the most damage. All that they had to do was let the police (the real police) do their job way back when, and this would have saved the trauma inflicted on the young victims. How does the decision to protect their coaching staff via a string of felonies look to them now? All that it did was create more victims and even more disgrace to the entire university. I wonder if this is why they could never force Joe to leave? I really, really, really hope that he wasn't blackmailing them on top of everything else that (allegedly) occurred. What a freaking cesspool they have created.

23. I saw that on the news tonight too.
The only thing that I can think of is that some of the fans are like the little kid from the 1919 "Blacksox Scandal".

They are so stunned that they are doing a present day version of "come on Joe...say it aint so".

JoePa is bigger than life in this area and it's just very difficult for some people to believe what they are seeing and hearing right now.

20. He thought he was next in line for the head coaching job
The allegations in 1998 bought him a forced retirement instead. The office (and use of the facilities) was part of the deal.

12. On Campus
I was surprised that Sandusky would shower with children on the Penn State campus itself. It probably means that his wife wouldn't let him bring kids home anymore because she knew something was up. It's also possible that people at Second Mile were well aware of Sandusky's sexual interest in children.

Sandusky seems to have had a number of enablers, people who were just looking for an excuse to look the other way.

14. not necessarily -- many of the incidents also took place at his house
Sandusky and his wife had six kids--all adopted--and apparently it wasn't unusual for them to have other kids from the Second Mile program staying over as well.

"Sandusky seems to have had a number of enablers, people who were just looking for an excuse to look the other way."

Indeed.
