Everyone is liberal when the issues effect them directly
SB-5 (issue 2) in Ohio is a prime example of that. Public workers who have voted conservative are now faced with loosing their right to collective bargain are suddenly siding with the liberals against the conservative Governor who crammed this through the legislature.

1. Self Interest generally rules. The only thing that trumps that is morality and right vs wrong

2. Right. I really would like to know
how many police and fire fighters and even teachers voted for the current Republican governors of Wisconsin and Ohio, only to be shocked, just shocked when those people, who have always made it clear where their loyalties lie, passed the union busting legislation.

It's my observation that many people never quite think through anything, never look at exactly what is meant by the rhetoric about lower taxes and so on. They never make the connection between big money and a bought and sold government. They don't get it that corporations emphatically do NOT have their best interests at heart. Instead, they believe the crap about welfare queens and how the rich create jobs and how terrible the death tax is.

4. I don't think most people pay attention to things until they smack them right in
the nose/wallet/pocketbook too and then suddenly it's a serious issue for them too.

I've seen this many times in the corp. environment, suddenly the self-righteous rugged individualistic butt-headed assholes that bragged about how tough and independent they were are clawing and lining up for the benefits they fought against, because now it affects them too.

5. We must have smarter than average Republican voters here in Illinois
Even they wouldn't vote for the Scott Walker clone we had running against the Democratic governor who replaced Blago.

They knew better. They weren't about to cut their own throats like the ones in Wisconsin and Ohio did.
