12. OccupyDenver has a 3 step non-violent de-escalation procedure.

1. Link arms or hold hands. The human contact tends to calm people down, and getting the entire crowd doing this makes it hard for provocateurs to dart in and out of the crowd making it look like a mob.

2. Sit down. This is designed to show a posture of non-violence that can't be misinterpreted.

3. Say "Shhhh". Again, designed to calm people, draw attention to the non-violent response.

The whole point is to make it hard for provocateurs to operate in a big crowd - it becomes obvious who's being non-violent and who's stirring the shit.

I'm an old fart and find that fighting with the law can really hurt a person and I truly believe the police are not above starting shit just to kick some hippie or OWS butt thereby proving how "violent" the protesters are.
