Thieves attempt to steal Ronald Reagan statue in Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH – A life-size statue of Ronald Reagan was damaged during an attempted theft from a memorial at Bonita Canyon Sports Park early Sunday, police said.

The bronze statue was found by authorities at about 5:30 a.m., broken off its foundation and tilted forward with other damage, after thieves apparently tied a chain around it and tried to pull it away using a pickup truck or other vehicle, police said.

"Either someone really didn't like Reagan or they tried to steal it so they can sell it for scrap metal," said police Sgt. Kirk Jacobi.

The statue has since been removed by city crews from its concrete base.

Okay, if tweekers aren't the culprits, then it's either someone who hates St. Ronnie very badly, or some freepers who want to sleep with it, I'm thinking.

8. Agreed. Bronze is like ~88% copper. Copper is hugely valuable right now.
To the point that people sometimes get themselves killed trying to steal active copper power lines. I don't know how much this thing weighs, but it would probably be worth many thousands of dollars on the scrap metal market.

4. "they tried to steal it so they can sell it for scrap metal"
That's better use for it than a memorial to President Redink.

9. Not gonna lie, when I was younger I did things like this
Including one national news making incident.

If this had been within 100 miles of me during that time... Well, what I would have done would have been much more artistic, but ya, it would've been a target

12. They need to leave it like it is, tilted like that
As for National Airport, it's an outmoded airport that's only been kept open for the convenience of self important bureaucrats, a fitting memorial to that horrible man.
