here in Oregon at 7:30am during rush hour. We need it to be lighter in the morning. Falling back to standard time is good for us here.

Budgets and all, I guess. There are only so many school buses.

The high school kids get home just when it's getting dark in the winter.

13. See, less bang for your buck.
When I was in high school, all schools started and ended at the same time. This made it much easier on parents. Of course, all buses were owned by the Board of Education, also.

35. where i live there are two bus runs. middle and hs take early bus
(my 7th grader gets on at 6:45am and gets home at 2:50). my 1st grader gets on at 8am and gets off at 3:40. Same bus driver my husband had. works out because when my daughter did pageturners or some other activity, she would get on the early bus and do it before school. when she does things like pageturners now she stays late and comes home on the late bus.

26. Same here, it gets depressing fast.
With year round DST, the schools could start an hour later, something that would greatly benefit the kids, especially the teenagers. They'd actually be awake when they got there.

The only reason we don't have it is parents whining about their kids going out in dark mornings. With an adjustment in school hours, it wouldn't be that way and it's something that should have been done years ago.

Back in Boston, people who work office hours only see daylight if they go out for lunch, something that gets expensive. Standard time just plain SUCKS.

mornings. Better for the kids waiting for the school bus, and better for us rural commuters who have to watch out for kamikaze deer every morning on the way to work. Now DST ends so late it will STILL be dark in the morning, and pitch black again within a week.

In the spring it's the same thing. It finally starts gets light in the morning, and then *bam!* another month of driving in the dark.

It irritates me no end! There's just no sense in it!

7. What? Screw that
Do you know that every year when we plop back to standard time that traffic fatalities increase? More pedestrians and bicyclists are hit when it gets dark early. We should stay on daylight savings all year round

10. Actually you have that wrong.
When DST kicks in, the accident rate goes up because everyone has to get up an hour earlier. It takes a week or two for people to reset their internal clock. It doesn't happen going back.

15. I never adapted to DST AT ALL this year, for the first time ever.
My sleep cycle has been so messed up, I could never go to bed at a reasonable hour, and then was always sleeping later than I wanted to. NEVER got switched over.

So now the clocks match my circadian rhythm again. Yay.

16. The sun comes up when the sun comes up.
Whatever notation we choose to ascribe to that is purely arbitrary.

That said, extending Daylight Saving Time is probably the only thing that Bush ever did that I agree with.

DST: It's not just for farmers and agricultural hands anymore.

19. Farmers and agricultural hands don't have to punch a clock - they already work by the sun.
DST has nothing to do with farmwork, and makes absolutely no difference. Do you think the cows get milked an hour later when DST starts?

DST is for the Moneyed Class, who get more time on the golf course after banking hours.

20. The moneyed class?
What a load of horseshit.

I have an extra hour to play with my dogs or work on my home after I get done punching a clock.

The moneyed class doesn't punch a clock. Get a dose of reality.

25. But you don't have an "extra hour".
You have nothing of the sort. You only have called actual mid-day "one o'clock" instead of "noon"; all else is unchanged. You just have a new name (i.e. 1:00) for what, objectively, is still the middle of the day.

38. You DO have an extra hour.
My employer sets my hours of work.

Therefore, if I get to leave work at 4:00 EST (5:00 EDT) I have AN EXTRA HOUR OF DAYLIGHT.

If I set my own hours, of course it doesn't matter, but for those of us who are employed by others in a rigid time structure, we do gain an extra hour.

I have no idea why this is so hard to understand.

42. I was trying to think of who DST serves who would have the clout to get Congress to extend it.
I don't for one moment believe it was done for the benefit of hourly wage earners.

And maybe you don't live as far north as I do. I punch a clock, too, which means I also punch an alarm clock every morning. At the height of summer, all DST means is that the sun is still up when it's time for me to go to bed. There's no "extra hour" after work, unless I want to go to work more sleep-deprived than usual.

39. actually it really messes farmers up
especially the dairies as the pick up time for the fluid milk, etc all gets moves and these the cows all have to be milked earlier or later and it causes all sorts of problems.

Just change the work hours- have summer hours and winter hours and be done with it.

17. If I was King of America...
...the first thing I would do it get rid of daylight savings time.

Second is I'd put New England on Atlantic Time. Or permanent DST, if that helps you visualize it.

Third, I'd fix the border between Central and Mountain time. Run that line down the western border of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Then I'd fix that little nugget of Mountain that moves into Oregon, and the swatch of Pacific that intrudes into Idaho.

Finally, I'd put the western edge of Eastern time down the Illinois/Indiana border and down the Mississippi.

Having fixed that, I'd also make Michigan's Upper Peninsula part of Wisconsin. That's been bugging me for years. Wisconsin on Central time, Michigan on Eastern time.

Then I'd get started on fixing the government. :D

There is NO difference between daylight savings and standard time. Zero. Any day that starts before 10:00 is a pain in the ass, and all the good shows run until 1:00.

I am NOT Benjamin fucking Franklin and this 'early to bed, early to rise' crap is for the birds.
