3. My brother and I talk about this all the time
Our parents are in a retirement home and it has been costing about 12,000/month for their care.
They were Depression babies, and very extremely frugal but Dad had a great retirement package and Mom saved every penny she could. They were well-invested. Now, even with all that, they are in danger of running out of money. I am unemployed (thank you bank bailouts) and my brother works hard every day but still has a hard time, with no savings or investments. My savings are running out, and at my age, I cannot find a job in my field. So should we make a suicide pact or what? When we get to the point of where my parents are, who or what will take care of us?

Maybe we will turn out like my friend who recently died of CHF. He ws waiting just another year for Medicare to kick in. He thought he had a bad cold. Wouldn't go to the doctor because he couldn't pay for it and had no health insurance (like my brother). It killed him.

Getting older these days is not going into "the golden years".... it's where the terror begins.

4. My parents' friends made fun of them for buying assisted living insurance.
I doubt they find it humorous now.

I am very sorry to hear of your circumstances. I wish you and your family the very best.

6. I make eight times what my dad did when I was a kid...
And I can't afford to buy a house like that in that neighborhood.

I'm the 99% too.
