DHS Hydrogen Peroxide Food Bomb Warning

Terrorists could use hydrogen peroxide and organic fuel mixtures (HPOMs), made by mixing concentrated hydrogen peroxide with a variety of organic fuels, in an attack against the United States. The viability, performance, and sensitivity of these explosives vary and are based on a number of factors including the fuel chosen, the ratio of peroxide to fuel, and the concentration of peroxide used. Peroxide can be concentrated from lower percentages by simple evaporation through heating, and it is readily available in a variety of stores. The organic fuels used in these mixtures include common products such as cumin, black pepper, flour, sugar, honey, acetone, nitromethane, ethanol (grain alcohol) or ground coffee. HPOMs are extremely sensitive to impact, friction, static/spark, and heat and in large quantities can self-heat and ignite if in sunlight or a hot room.

it will take off old varnish/glue etc. You put some on and let it bubble then wipe it up, up comes all the nasty crap from the floor. I buy it practically by the crate at Big Lots. Gee I hope I don't get mistaken for a terrorist! :yoiks:

Ammonia should also work.

Personally I favour good old elbow grease for removing that sort of buildup.

it WILL remove the varnish too and take it down to bare wood. You would have to refinish it maybe even restain. Unless you want to refinish the whole thing I would use something like Murphy's soap.

because they don't evolve nitrogen dioxide or nitrates like a typical nitrate based explosive. Especially when the HPOMs are converted and crystallized into covalently bonded organic peroxides. It could've upped the sensationalist fear factor at least another notch or two...

And a major LOL-WTF?!? at the "blowtorch" as an "improvised heating example" for making explosives. Some dumbass is going to say, "Hey, I have peroxide, sugar, and a blowtorch at home!"... and then go win a Darwin Award.

EDIT: Just so people don't get the wrong idea about me, I'm an engineer in the materials science and test engineering field... not some nutball. And I can say with certainty only an idiot would mess with this stuff - it's too dangerous and spontaneous even for a trained laboratory technicians.

20. When I was 12, I used match heads to make a "bang stick"

That's what we called it.

Get two very large bolts (1/2" or so) and a nut to fit them. Screw the nut onto the bolt halfway, making a "cup". Fill the cup with match heads. Screw the other bolt into the nut, VERY SLOWLY, until tight.
Then, voilà! A "bang stick". Throw it at the pavement and it bangs, sending the bolts in opposite directions. We later learned to tie the 2 bolts together so you could find them.

Very dangerous, very stupid idea. But we had it down to a science.

I think that the fine folks at DHS are starting to realize that you can make a bomb out of thousands of everyday household objects and products easily available at our local grocery and hardware stores.
