One might think $1 million in confiscated drug money would not be difficult to track down. One would be wrong.

This story starts with a telephone call in June 2009. A state police trooper and union representative I had never met dialed me up to let me in on a drug bust on Interstate 91.

My source told me two guys had been stopped after their car was spotted by a trooper on a road construction job who had picked up an alert with a description of the vehicle. My source said police found $1 million in drug money in the car.

1. They can take away your money period...
...and you have to go to court and prove it wasn't drug money in order to get it back.

NPR once did a week long story on the abuse that the drug war allows to be done legally. There were two men that were pulled over while traveling and I believe they were going to auctions where you paid in cash. They had $11k on them when they were pulled over on a "known drug route" and agreed to a search of their car. The officers took the money without arresting them but threatened to if they protested and made them sign forms stating that if they wanted their money back they would have to appear in front of a judge. I can't remember all the details but it took two months to get their money back and only after the two men got the media involved.

3. This guys occupation is gambling and the cops pulled in
over in Federal Way WA. They took his money after searching his car with no drugs found. I know this kid and he was never involved in drugs through use or selling. It took him 2 months and a lawyer to get his own money back. No charges were ever leved against him as there was nothing to charge him with. Tell me this country doesn't smell from corruption.

4. I like reporters like this, who are something of a rare breed- because the REAL story is often...
...what's happened in relation to a story weeks or months later.

BTW, the Bush years were fucking filled every day with stories which deserved follow-ups weeks or months later. Sad to say, but this administration, too.
