Stop with the "be careful what you wish for" B.S.
The next Ronald Reagan was not on that stage last night.

The only person on that stage last night with the slightest possibility of defeating Barack Obama next November was Mitt Romney.

As Democrats, we should be wishing for the GOP to be colossally stupid enough to nominate a Herman Cain or a Michelle Bachmann.

When one of us says so, we invariably get nonsensical replies saying "I remember 1980" and "Carter wished for the same thing" and "be careful what you wish for".

Ronald Reagan was a successful 2-term Governor of the largest state in the union. He was a well-known, and well-liked, figure in Americana. He was also pushing a governing philosophy that hadn't been tried in 50 years, so the American people didn't know what a bad philosophy it was. They hadn't personally experienced it. It sounded good.

Every ultra-right conservative that moves ahead temporarily in the polls is not the next Ronald Reagan. Quit being afraid of your own shadow.

Herman Cain or Michelle Bachmann would struggle to get 40% of the national vote.

Rick Perry would struggle to get 45%.

I am very careful what I wish for. I wish for the Herman Cains and Michelle Bachmanns and Rick Perrys to stay viable in the GOP race for as long as humanly possible, to use their war chests to damage Mitt Romney as much as they possibly can.

... Because one of those people on the stage last night is going to be the GOP nominee. That candidate is, with 99% likelihood, Mitt Romney.

But I can still wish for the 1% to happen. I can wish for the most colossal mistake in modern two-party nominating processes. I'm very careful what I wish for.... and I wish for Herman Cain to somehow win that nomination.

1. Why is Romney the only one who can win?
Edited on Wed Oct-19-11 07:51 AM by dkf
Personally his explanation of why his health care plan isn't Obama's plan is so obviously bs.

He is trying to tell us black is white and expects us to swallow that? I can't believe anyone thinks he is Presidential.

2. Let's suppose it's Obama vs. Bachmann, then one month before
the election, the derivatives market collapses. Today's news indicates that if this happens, thanks to the refusal of the Obama administration to properly regulate the banks, American taxpayers will be on the hook for $2 trillion owed to investment bankers due to unbelievably risky bets. So the economy and banking system will collapse, taxpayers will be left holding the bag (a far bigger bag even than in 2008). Many millions of jobs will disappear within weeks as bank lending shuts down overnight.

Obama might beat Bachmann in that situation, but he might not. And that's not at all a highly-unlikely scenario.

3. Ronnie Raygun was seen as a fool.

Until he started dealing with terrorist during hostage situation in Iran.

He paid off the terrorist to keep the hostages until he was sworn in as president.

Within minutes of taking the oath, the hostages were released.

Seems the only thing you need to do to be the president is commit treason.

I'm sure the current crop of RepubliCONS are more than willing.

8. As I've come to learn
from watching football for a number of years...

anything at all can happen. Both in football and in politics.

I recall many times hoping that, for example, a certain weaker team beats another stronger one in the playoffs so that my team (riddled with injuries) could have a better chance.

Then I was very sorry later on when that weaker team somehow finds a way to beat MY team as well.

You just never know what's going to happen during 60 minutes of football.

AND you just never know what's going to happen 12 months before an election.

I don't have a crystal ball, so I couldn't say with certainty WHO is going to win the Republican nomination, or whether that person could ultimately win the WH.

Many people here believe they know what's going to happen, but really, IMO, they're just engaging in wishful thinking.

10. They are all monstrosities in their own way.
America has become what we used to fear. My wish is for rational thought an increasingly rare commodity and devoid among the Republican Party.
