"Get a job" is the new "Let them eat cake"
This thought has probably been posted here before (if it has feel free to lock, if it hasn't, feel free to comment)...but I just seem to notice this theme coming up over and over again in the past week in reference to the camped out protestors.

I'm sick of the elitist pricks repeating this phrase over and over again. And I imagine it fuels the anger of the 10% of the 99% who are currently jobless and looking or jobless and frustrated.

The haters need some remedial math.

6. In some fields (graphic arts) it's 400+ applicants per position
This is a fact.

11. For 20+ years design, commercial art.
And hardly any company hires any 'artists' for full time jobs. For 20 years these type of commercial art jobs have been 'independent contractor' jobs 'as needed' by projects. Ad agencies, publishers and even packaging design type companies haven't employed staff commercial artists for over 20 years.

Despite the commercials on TV touting careers in 'web design' this is not a field anybody should enter. Too many entities don't need 'artists' anymore.

In fact, at least 2 commercial design branding companies I know of are getting online 'artists' out of Singapore to 'copy' images they rip off from American creators and give them to copy.

16. I've been involved with book publishing for years.
Edited on Sun Oct-16-11 11:37 PM by PETRUS
As time wore on, we did things on a work-for-hire basis more and more as fewer artists are kept on the payroll.

The publishing business is interesting (and in some ways, important) but certain aspects of it are pretty unsavory. Ask me how much of the manufacturing is done in the far east and why... (Inexpensive labor and lax environmental standards, of course! And we'll happily burn fossil fuels to ship pulp from Canada to China to be milled and shipped back to North America, because it's "cheaper.")

PS. I hope you are and will be ok.

3. Hell Bruce Hornsby was singing about this kind of reply by the well to do....
in 1985 and it was also a favorite rejoinder by the conservatives in the 60's and 70's...

I guess there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to conservatives.

4. Bruce Hornsby, "The Way It Is":
Standing in line marking time--
Waiting for the welfare dime
'Cause they can't buy a job
The man in the silk suit hurries by
As he catches the poor old ladies' eyes
Just for fun he says "Get a job"

8. My response is always: "Yeah? WHAT jobs would those be? There ARE none."
I am always cautioning my clients to hang onto whatever they job they have for dear life, because if they lose it, THERE IS NOTHING ELSE OUT THERE. I know too many educated, intelligent people with good work ethics who have been out of work for over a year, and those who get new jobs are seriously underemployed, underpaid, and overqualified.

WHAT recovery??

19. # of jobs nationwide is counted by Dept Labor
Edited on Mon Oct-17-11 01:47 AM by sam11111
Find that stat at link in my sig...may be in the form of applicants per open job. Look at summary bordered box on the right top.
Ah on edit...
Fm njfac site...
--------------------
"In August, 2011, the latest month available, the number of job openings was 3.1 million, little changed from July. Although the number of job openings remained below the 4.4 million openings when the recession began in December 2007, the level in August was 944,000 higher than in July 2009 (the most recent trough)." Job Openings and Labor Turnover Estimates, October 12, 2011.+ Thus there are now more than 9 job-wanters for each available job."

The link at the boTtom of their "box" leads to that fact pasted above. But first, to get to THEM, start at my sig line's link at bottom here.
---------------------
End of edit ------
-----------------
Basic stat tho IIRC is at BLS site , hard to find page there as part of JOLT table, also hard to read the correct cell of table. Confusing terminology there.

drove by and shouted that at a group of us. I just asked "where?". People seemed to think that was appropriate.

I usually ignore those folks though. They either will refuse to listen and understand or someday, due to their own misfortune, they will understand.

29. The other right-wing meme: Create your own job!
I've seen that repeatedly, with them acting like anyone can just create a job and every single person should be an entrepreneur.

It's not that easy, dumbasses. Especially when creating a job requires demand, and with less and less money in the pockets of average Americans, there is no demand.

I'm sure their perfect world is one in which every job caters to the wealthy.

They're slaves, and they don't even realize it. They have a slave mentality.

some of you younger DU'ers may not be familiar with the song.

I totally agree; there's nothing out there. A friend of mine told me yesterday her
stepson, who was unemployed 3 years, recently got an assembly line job paying $8.50/hr.
SHe said the job was like the episode of I LOVE LUCY where she works on an assembly line.
THe guy got the job because his old boss put in a work for him.
