Christian conservatives say they’ll vote to beat Obama, even if it means supporting Romney
http://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/perry-watch/headlines/20111010-christian-conservatives-say-theyll-vote-to-beat-obama-even-if-it-means-supporting-romney.ece

WASHINGTON — Four years ago, evangelicals didn’t rally around John McCain, the Republican nominee who wasn’t their ideal candidate.

This year, many Christian conservatives say the fervor to replace Barack Obama ensures they won’t stay at home, even if it means supporting Mitt Romney.

“Romney is the most liberal of the conservative candidates we have, and he’s not my first choice,” said Tom Cooney of Virginia Beach, Va., a delegate at last week’s Values Voter Summit. “But if he were to get the nomination, I’d vote for him.”

That was the feeling of many attending the political showcase of Christian conservatives. They’re united in the desire to oust the current occupant of the White House, but clearly divided over the best candidate to do it.

There you have it.

1. Their votes are predicated more on whom they hate more than whom they support.

2. And accordingly
we should vote for Obama, even if the only thing it means is handing the conservatives another defeat. It only takes 15 to 20 minutes to cast a ballot, and defeating conservatives is always worth 15 or 20 minutes of my time.

3. THERE is NOTHING Christian about GOP conservatism!!
It is all about the money. To put CHRISTIAN and CONSERVATIVE in the same sentence today, is to disparage the work that Jesus Christ did on earth. There is not one, single policy, that the GOP/TPARTY NATIONALISTS have introduced that is CHRIST like in nature. I think it is time for DEMS to have a VALUES SUMMIT. One that is all about respect, equality and duty to and of one's neighbor and one's country. The GOP and TPARTY NATIONALISTS are trying to reshape the US of AMERICA into an oligarchy that really discourages democracy by taking power away from the people and focusing it at the top where money reigns.

4. Gotta wonder why...
Hmmm...Romney is not a Christian, but Obama is. Yet, they'll vote for Romney. Hmm. What might be their underlying issue with the president, given that everyone else is supposed to be? Hmm.

10. If you control for race and religion
Romney is still closer to the right wing base on the issues than Obama is. They could both be white baptists and most conservatives would still choose Romney. He is a Republican, after all. Very few hardcore conservatives would choose ANY Democrat over a Republican, even a RINO. Identity politics matter most to the bases when there aren't a whole lot of differences between the candidates besides identity (e.g. the 2008 Democratic primaries). When you have all sorts of other differences, identity is less important. Now, swing voters and independents are a different story, but we're talking about the Republican base here.

18. Their underlying issue is the D behind his name
Forget racism--yes, there is some there but one of the two people who keeps winning the straw polls is darker-skinned than Obama is so it's not a big factor anymore.

Obama is a Democrat. That means he's going to raise your taxes, turn your church into a mosque and abort your nine-year-old.

6. It's one thing to *say* they'll vote for him...
...but muted enthusiasm for Romney would mean fewer would actually make the effort to get out and vote, regardless of wanting to vote against Obama.

Then again, Obama will be suffering from muted enthusiasm from Democrats too.

The golden opportunity for Democrats if Romney wins the Republican nomination is that one or more teabagger candidates might run independent campaigns and split up the Republican vote.

17. Exactly. Not a big draw, and everyone is used to Obama now. I think they won't
show up in the numbers we fear. But I think Obama's supporters still will.

We don't get everything we want from Obama, but he's no embarrassment.

12. I guess that explains why they won't be
voting for Herman Cain.

I swan, these guys fracture me. They'd be hilarious if they weren't so hate-filled and destructive.

15. Conservatism these days is Mammon Worship, as such it's the opposite of Christianity.
For some of these folks, their faith is only a sign they wave to support their politics and their greed.
Compare with Christ's teachings and you'll see.

19. They won't
They say they will, but when it comes to enthusiasm at the polls, they won't show. My family is full of Christian conservatives, and they talk a good show, but they wouldn't vote for Romney even if Jesus personally told them to do so.
