Wisconsin: Recall Walker IS ON
from my email...

Dear Scuba,

After weeks of discussion and positive collaboration with grassroots activists like you, today comes an historic announcement.

In just a few hours, I will go live on The Ed Shultz Show at 9:00 CST to announce that, in collaboration with United Wisconsin, the grassroots effort to recall Scott Walker will begin Nov. 15th.

We wanted activists like you to be the first to hear the news because you know what it will take to win this fight.

In fewer than 37 days, we will need to organize, train and fund an army of grassroots volunteers who will need to collect more than 540,206 valid recall signatures.

Wisconsin can't wait. Now is the time!

Mike Tate

Chair, Democratic Party of Wisconsin

1. ugh, not a fan of the timing.
Getting 700k will be tough and the holidays will only make it tougher.

21. Actually the holidays could help signature collection efforts
Find a good place to collect signatures near some big retail stores and you have the potential to collect hundreds of signatures per night, people are really out and about that time of year so there are lots of opportunities to approach people on the street. Granted it is harder to catch people at home when you doorknock, but doorknocking is often a slower process than collecting signatures in public places anyways.

27. There is lots of public land and lots of volunteers
There is nothing they can do to stop you from collecting signatures on a public sidewalk. And remember how many volunteers there were for previous recalls? There will be at least as many for the Walker recall.

4. REALLY dumb timing.
In addition to holidays and shitty weather, this will put us right in line with Republican primaries.

6. What shitty weather? ....
... I obviously wasn't privy to all the deliberations re: timing. I wonder how much this had to do with stopping his agenda vs. this is the best time to get the signatures/votes???

I do think we can get it done!

7. *IF* we get 700,000 plus signatures in 60 days, the recall election will be in line with Republican
primaries.

I don't like this timing AT ALL.

8. GAB said the recall wouldn't be on the same day as the primary...
Edited on Mon Oct-10-11 06:37 PM by Ellipsis
In response to increasing chatter about upcoming efforts to recall Gov. Scott Walker from office and when the date of such an election might fall, Government Accountability Board spokesperson Reid Magney told dane101 it would be "impossible" for the recall to end up on the same day as the spring general election.

9. I get that it's not the same day, they'll be GOTV and they show up FAR better than we do in special
elections.

10. The Republican primaries will be decided before April
Edited on Mon Oct-10-11 06:49 PM by dragonlady
I'm just about sure of that.

Edit to add: If we wait too long, he may be indicted and resign, and then we have Gov. Kleefisch to deal with. The more I hear about the John Doe investigation that's now underway, apparently probing Walker's campaign practices, the more nervous I feel. Could Kleefisch be recalled within the first year of succeeding to the governorship? Who knows--the constitution was not written with such a scenario in mind. For those outside Wisconsin, she's a former local TV personality who is far to the right end of the spectrum and not overly bright.

12. Uh, if we file petition in January, they have 31 days to certify and election 6 weeks later.
That puts an election in early Marchish.

I am trying to find out what will become of Kleefish in all of this.

18. She'd be out
5.01.(5)(a)

(5) Election of governor and lieutenant governor.
(a) In every general election to choose the governor and the lieutenant governor, each elector shall have a single vote applicable to both offices. The persons receiving the greatest number of legal votes cast jointly for them for governor and lieutenant governor shall be declared elected, and the canvassers shall so determine and certify.

She would be out if Walker was recalled...
But what if Walker resigned at the last minute before the recall election? It is my understanding that because the signatures would have been gathered for Walker they would not be applicable to Kleefisch if she were to become Governor before the recall takes place and we would have to collect signstures all over again. To be safe it would make sense to collect signatures to recall both of them at the same time.

28. GAB rules require separate petitions for each
From Recall Manual for Congressional, County and State Officials (p. 3) on the GAB website:

The recall petition must identify the name of the officeholder. If more than one officeholder is to be recalled, a separate petition must be circulated and filed for each. Only one officeholder can be named on a petition.

23. People can also contribute money.
The group is also looking for volunteers. Local residents and anyone that has the time to volunteer should. Recalling Walker will be a major blow in favor of a fair, democratic society. Get the bastard out of office.

The icing on the cake would be if he were proven guilty in the recent scandal he's embroiled in -- hey a guy can dream, right?
