House Weeper John "Drunky McOrange-Glo" Boehner declines state dinner invite
Edited on Sat Jan-15-11 11:47 AM by johnfunk
Is it because he hates diplomacy...
This week, House Speaker John Boehner raised eyebrows by turning down an offer to ride on Air Force One with President Obama and others headed to a memorial service in Tucson. Instead, he appeared at a reception for Republican operative Maria Cino. Now, on the heels of renewed calls for bipartisanship and toned-down political rhetoric, Boehner is saying “thanks, but no thanks” to another offer to appear at an event with the president – Wednesday’s White House state dinner.

The dinner, honoring the Chinese President Hu Jintao, will pull together leaders on both sides of the aisle, along with celebs, CEOs, Cabinet members, Supreme Court justices and media bigwigs.
... or a scheduling conflict: dinner starts at eight, but his binge drinking starts at five thirty?
EDIT: Fixed link, I think…

15. Maybe he is
really an alcoholic...it's starting to sound like it. Just like W...he never had WH dinners or entertained. Always locked up at night with his bottle of vodka.

I'm beginning to wonder....with the tears? Something is just not right w/ this Orange Man.

9. And then he will cry when the invites s top coming
I can't help but wonder where he thinks snubbing the White House will get him? I also can't help wondering how many times the White House is going to send him invitations and him refusing them before they stop? And last but not least, I wonder if he'll have a reason not to attnend the State of the Union Address?

23. If the president is smart about this ...
... (and I'd be surprised if he wasn't), he'll keep sending the invitations as long as the refusals keep making the news.

His refusals are much more newsworthy than his attendance.

10. no body interferes with his drinking schedule
Goddamn, he reminds me of my parents. Nothing interfered with their nightly drunk.
Not school plays, not kids in sports, not even graduation.

12. Traditional etiquette, which is still much followed in
DC's political social circles, dictates that an invitation to dine at the White House can only be declined if you cannot be in DC, have died, or if an immediate family member is on death's door or dead. To decline such an invitation, in all other cases, is a direct insult to the President. It's just not done. Boner is taking a big chance with this.

14. "A direct insult to the President"...
I think that's the whole point. Insulting the current President plays well with his party's base.

16. Right. And that's how it will be interpreted by many.
However, since the right has no sense of propriety, they'll probably celebrate Boner's snub. A lot of stuff in DC has changed. Tradition has gone out the window, with media positioning being the only thing anyone cares about.

Personally, I think Boner has stepped in smelly stuff with this move.

anyhow, while in his cups. Its probably best he won't be there.

17. Either he is deliberately insulting or he is afraid to appear in public
with his drinking problem. I think it has to be the first since he does attend repug things.

22. It could well be both; one alone is bad enough...
... but the combination is plausible and would suggest that Boehner's thinking are more influenced by the cocktail hour and the lobbyists who feed his addiction.

20. Can you imagine if Boehner had not been invited?
The howling from the GOP side would be non-stop. That whole Republican meme about Obama not reaching out to them is repeated over and over by the right-wing and their media friends. Yet when they continually disrespect the President, no one in the corporate media (exceptions: Ed, Keith, and Rachel) holds them accountable. Disgraceful!!!! Can you imagine if a liberal Supreme Court Justice had reacted negatively to Bush's SOTU address or if a Democrat had shouted, "You Lie!!" during a Bush speech to a joint session of Congress? The media would still be scolding Democrats about their lack of courtesy and decorum.
