ROFLMAO: Update: Military records: 2 demotions for RI Rep. Gordon
Update: Military records: 2 demotions for RI Rep. Gordon

By Philip Marcelo
Journal State House Bureau

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- State Rep. Daniel Gordon was demoted twice during his tenure in U.S. Marine Corps, a spokeswoman for the armed-service branch confirmed on Wednesday.

~snip~

Since his arrest last month on a charge of driving with a suspended license and the ensuing calls for his resignation from top political leaders, Gordon has faced scrutiny over his military service.

The freshman lawmaker has consistently cited post-traumatic stress from the Gulf War to many of his troubles with the law. Gordon has a lengthy criminal record in Massachusetts that includes an outstanding arrest warrant from 2008 for failing to appear in court for charges including eluding a police officer. He is set to appear in court in Fall River on Oct. 17 to answer to those charges.

But the Marine Corps has said that there is no record of Gordon ever serving in the Gulf or earning a Purple Heart, which is awarded to soldiers wounded or killed in service.

1. I can find no mention in that article that he is a Republican...
except in the comments section where a winger whines about this scrutiny of Gordon and demands all representatives be scrutinized.

Libertarian Party of RI welcomes embattled state Rep. Dan Gordon as a member

The Libertarian Party of Rhode Island (“Minimum Government, Maximum Freedom”) has gained a high-profile member: state Representative Dan Gordon, who 1) was tossed out of the House Republican caucus earlier this month; 2) was revealed to have a criminal record in Massachusetts after he went to make a report to state police; and 3) has resisted calls to resign, saying he will instead go by the will of his constituents while planning a reelection run next year.

The LPRI has this to say about Gordon in a news release:

On September 21, he became a dues-paying member of the Libertarian Party.

It is not clear if he has changed his voter registration from “Republican” to “Libertarian.” If he does so, the state will consider him a registered independent, because the Libertarian Party has never been a qualified party in Rhode Island. However, the voter registration form includes a blank line for “political party” so he is free to write in “Libertarian” on the card.

Gordon supported Ron Paul for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, and says he has long been a libertarian by philosophy. His election to the Rhode House in November 2010 was extremely close; the vote was 2,707 for Gordon and 2,660 for his Democratic opponent. He represents the 71st district, centered on Portsmouth.
